Singapore’s public buses are run by four bus operators (SBS Transit, SMRT Buses, Tower Transit, Go-Ahead Singapore), offering affordable and convenient transport all round the island. Private bus operators offer City Direct, Premium and Free Shuttle Buses as an alternate means of travelling around.
Basic Bus Services
Currently, basic bus services are offered by public transport operators (PTOs) SBS Transit, SMRT Buses, Tower Transit as well as Go-Ahead, each with their own areas of responsibility. They usually operate between 5:00am to 1:00am the next day, with selected routes having extended operating hours during eves of Public Holidays.
There are two main forms of basic bus services: Trunk services and Feeder services.
Trunk services are spread all across the island, usually connecting between different towns.
Feeder services operates around a neighborhood. They usually operate out of a bus interchange, providing connections to various parts of housing estates, and are key to the hub-and-spoke transport system of Singapore.
Closely associated with their parent services, Route Variants serve similar catchment areas and are operated either within or outside of their parent service’s operating hours. Some are supplementary routes introduced to ply crowded stretches of their parent trunk routes, operating alongside them either full-day or only during the weekday peak hours. Others operate outside of their parent service’s operating hours (e.g. weekday nights and weekends), plying slightly different routes. Short-Trip services are short-haul trips that operate only along a segment of their parent route and incorporate the suffix A, B, C and even W.
Terminating Trips
Terminating Trips will display a “T” suffix to their parent route.
Express & City Direct Bus Services
Express bus services incorporate express sectors along their route and charge distance-based Express fares, which are more expensive than basic fares.
Three main types of Express services exist. Full Day express services offer connections from housing estates to the City, or between housing estates. Limited-stop express services closely mirror their parent route but call at fewer bus stops along the way. SBS Transit branded their limited-stop express routes as Fast-Forward routes, before they were re-branded as Express Routes in August 2018. Finally, CBD express services are the most numerous, connecting housing estates to the Central Business District (CBD) and operating only during the peak hours.
City Direct Services introduced as part of the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP) also fall the CBD Express category. Operated by Private Bus Operators, several services are slowly being handed over to Public Transport Operator (PTO) control.

Premium Services
Operated by private bus operators, Premium Bus Services (PBS) offers a fully air-conditioned ride and a guaranteed seat on board. These services charge at least 1.5 times the fare of their basic bus/rail equivalents, and cater to a niche market of commuters. Most of these services ply between the Central Business District and outlying housing estates.
Bus-Pooling Subscription-Based Services such as GrabShuttle requires commuters to pay & book a seat in advance before riding.
