New Bridge Road Bus Terminal to be relocated

New Bridge Road Bus Terminal will be moved to a new location by end-2017, following which the existing bus terminal will be demolished.

The new bus terminal will be built along Kampong Bahru Road, near the junction with Jalan Bukit Merah, and will occupy land formerly owned by Malayan Railways. Along with an adjacent surface car park, both transport facilities will be cleared to build a new surgery centre, expanding existing infrastructure at Singapore General Hospital (SGH).

Called the Elective Care Centre, the new centre is scheduled to be ready by 2022, adding more operating theatres, specialist outpatient clinics and inpatient facilities to SGH.

New Bridge Road Bus Terminal was built in the 1970s to replace roadside bus terminals of the past, which frequently clogged up the street. Many bus services were diverted from their roadside terminating points to new terminal.

With the construction of the East-West Line in the early 1990s (and later North-East Line in 2003), many bus routes between New Bridge Road and the housing estates were withdrawn or amended away from New Bridge Road under various bus rationalization schemes to prevent wasteful duplication of the MRT lines.

In February 2018, it was finally announced that New Bridge Road Bus Terminal will be relocated to Kampong Bahru Bus Terminal from 10 March 2018.

The bus terminal could keep the New Bridge Road Bus Terminal name. Otherwise, it could be renamed to Kampong Bahru Bus Terminal as it is located at Kampong Bahru Road.
