Old Choa Chu Kang Bus Interchange

Old Choa Chu Kang Bus Interchange was a bus station located at the Choa Chu Kang Town Centre, serving residential areas around Choa Chu Kang, Yew Tee, Teck Whye, Bukit Panjang, and industrial areas around Sungei Tengah, Sungei Kadut. The bus interchange ceased operations on 16 December 2018, with the opening of the New Choa Chu Kang Bus Interchange.

The old interchange was located at Blk 301 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 4, next to Choa Chu Kang Loop. The sheltered concourse building is located just next to Choa Chu Kang MRT Station and Lot One Shoppers’ Mall. Nearby public amenities include Choa Chu Kang Town Council, Choa Chu Kang Public Library and Choa Chu Kang Park. SMRT Buses was the anchor operator of Old Choa Chu Kang Bus Interchange.

This interchange will be demolished to make way for the future Jurong Region Line station, scheduled for completion in around 2025.

The Interchange:

Old Choa Chu Kang Bus Interchange is a bus station located in the residential town of Choa Chu Kang. Connecting with Choa Chu Kang MRT Station along the North-South MRT Line, the interchange is a transport node for commuters heading in and out of town, allowing for convenient transfers between the rail network and the many bus services at the interchange.

The interchange has a single vehicular concourse area, with separate vehicle ingress and egress routes leading to Choa Chu Kang Loop. The linear alighting berths can accommodate three rigid buses (or two bendy buses), and there are five sawtooth berths for bus boarding, all with queuing lanes installed. Buses park at a bus park opposite the passenger concourse with 32 available lots, and separate ingress and egress lanes lead to Choa Chu Kang Loop.

The interchange concourse has pedestrian entrance/exits located the North edge (towards Choa Chu Kang Loop / The Warren condominium), South edge (towards Choa Chu Kang Avenue 4) and East edge (towards Choa Chu Kang MRT / Lot One Shoppers’ Mall). Sheltered walkways and ramps connect the interchange to the adjacent Choa Chu Kang MRT) .

LTA commissioned a traffic light at the interchange exit on 07 November 2015.

Historical Background

Choa Chu Kang started with roadside bus terminal along Teck Whye Avenue in 1988 with a handful of bus services (e.g. 75, 179, 185). The roadside terminal was later moved to Choa Chu Kang Avenue 4 after the opening of Choa Chu Kang MRT station in March 1990.

On 8 April 1990, Choa Chu Kang Bus Interchange opened under Singapore Bus Service (SBS) control and remains operational today with little structural modifications.

In late 1999, Choa Chu Kang was progressively handed over to Trans-Island Bus Service (TIBS) in exchange for bus services in Sengkang and Punggol as areas of control were redrawn after SBS was awarded the operating license for the North-East Line. The handover took place in the following phases:

  • 25 Jul 1999: Service 190
  • 29 Aug 1999: Services 185, 300, 302 and 307
  • 26 Dec 1999: Services 67, 172, 175 and 188.

Service 175 is now Service 975. Service 185 was amended to the present-day 985.

To facilitate the construction of the Jurong Region Line at Choa Chu Kang, the old interchange concourse and nearby Block 303 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 4 Multi-storey car park will be demolished, with tenants asked to vacate the premises by 29 November 2019.

As such, the LTA has announced that the Choa Chu Kang Bus Interchange will serve as a temporary car park until a new permanent car park is built in the vicinity.
