As many major roads in Singapore have multiple lanes per direction, it may be difficult for selected bus services to call at certain bus stops along their routes despite passing by the stops physically due to right filtering, a process which involves buses making a right turn to enter a road that is perpendicular to the current road. To reduce the risk of road traffic accidents, sufficient leeway must be given for vehicles making a right turn from one road to another to avoid colliding with other vehicles that are either proceeding straight along the road or making a left turn.
For instance, despite passing by the bus stop, Bus Service 30 has to skip the bus stop opposite Mountbatten Stn (bus stop code 80279), as its buses have to filter right to turn from northbound Mountbatten Road into eastbound Old Airport Road.
To partially resolve the issue of skipped bus stops due to right filtering, staggered bus stops are set up for selected bus services to allow them to continue to serve the surrounding area near the skipped bus stops without compromising on commuters’ accessibility to key transport nodes such as MRT stations.
