Stroller Restraint Systems rolled out on public buses

New Stroller Restraint Systems have been sighted on buses since July 2019.

As part of several family-friendly initiatives announced during the Committee Of Supply Debate 2019, all wheelchair-accessible public buses would be retrofitted with stroller restraint systems by 2020.

Design:

The stroller restraint unit is bolted on to an existing grab pole located at the wheelchair bay.

Pulling on the plunger (located at the right-hand side) releases the centre bar, and a stroller can be fixed into the restraint unit. Pushing down on the centre bar locks it back into place. Operating instructions are affixed next to each restraint unit.

Beside the restraint unit, there is a pair of velcro straps for additional safety.

History:

Prior to 2017, strollers had to be folded before boarding a bus. In a step towards a more inclusive transport system, parents and caregivers were allowed to bring open strollers onboard all public buses from 2 April 2017, while adhering to a set of guidelines published by the LTA. Two months later, on 29 June 2017, a prototype stroller restraint system was trialled on Bus Service 69.

The success of the trial was acknowledged during the COS 2018. The following year, at the COS 2019, it was announced that all public buses would be retrofitted with stroller restraint systems by 2020.

Curiously, the Alexander Dennis Enviro500 (Batch 2) and Volvo B8L which entered service in 2017 featured restraining belts at the wheelchair bay. Newer buses introduced in 2018 and 2019 did not have this feature.
