The interchange took over operations from Woodlands Regional Bus Interchange on 12 March 2016, which is presently undergoing addition and alteration work as part of the construction of the new Woodlands Station along the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL). A reopening date for Woodlands Regional Bus Interchange has yet to be announced.

History:
Before the interchange came into operation, bus services in Woodlands were served by Woodlands Bus Interchange located at Woodlands Centre Road. In existence since the 1970s, the interchange served the former Woodlands Town Centre, which was located very near to the Causeway. Another bus terminal, Marsiling Bus Terminal, was situated not too far away at Marsiling Town, beside Block 201 along Admiralty Road. Introduced in the 1980s, this bus terminal was home to TIBS services 950, 951 and 952, which went to Shenton Way, Jurong and Marina Centre respectively.
In 1996, both bus terminals were rendered obsolete with the opening of Woodlands Regional Bus Interchange. Bus services were either diverted to the new interchange or withdrawn. In 2016, interchange operations were relocated to the Woodlands Temporary Bus Interchange north of the existing site to facilitate construction works for the underground Woodlands Station as part of the new Thomson-East Coast Line.
The Interchange:

With the construction of the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) and a new Woodlands Station underneath Woodlands Regional Interchange, the existing interchange had to be closed to facilitate underground construction works, with addition and alteration works to be carried out (likely including a linkway to the new station). The solution was a temporary bus interchange built north of the existing interchange, for the relocation of all of the bus services currently serving Woodlands Regional Interchange. Contract T221 for the construction of the Temporary Woodlands Regional Bus Interchange was awarded to JS Metal Pte. Ltd. on 17 Mar 2014, at a sum of S$12,650,000.00.
Like most other temporary interchanges, the concourse wraps around the bus park, which is situated in the middle. A long alighting berth accommodates at seven buses, and ten boarding berths across its length cater for boarding activity (similar in number to the existing interchange). The parking bay has room for 51 articulated buses (18-metre) and 10 rigid buses (12-metre). A single combined entrance and exit leads to Woodlands Square.
Unique features:
The host of new features at Woodlands Temporary Interchange is the result of SMRT’s tie-up with NEC, which supplied the many technologies that help to streamline interchange operations.
Firstly, a free electric buggy service was launched for the benefit of commuters who have difficult moving around. The electric buggy service operates from 7:00am to 11:00pm, and can be called using the interactive panels stationed around the interchange. The buggies are based in the interchange with their own charging station near Berth B4, and red lanes drawn throughout the interchange encourage commuters to give way to the buggy when they are in operation.
Another system supplied by NEC is one that tracks available spaces at the alighting berths and parking lots. This information is, in turn, relayed to bus drivers via two large screens mounted around the interchange. In addition, a sophisticated camera network tracks bus movements, and is able to relay the registration numbers of incoming buses to the interchange control room, as well as tell where each bus is parking in the interchange.
Similar to Yishun Temporary Bus Interchange, boarding berths at Woodlands Temporary Bus Interchange have dedicated priority seats and a wheelchair waiting area, allowing those of lower mobility to board the bus first. In addition to bus timings shown around the interchange, every berth is equipped with a bus timings board for commuters’ easy reference.
