Changi Airport MRT Station

Passengers heading for the City should board the train no later than 11:18pm to be able to connect with the last Tuas Link bound train at Tanah Merah, Passengers taking the last train out of Changi Airport will still be able to connect with the last Pasir Ris bound train.

Train frequencies are 7 – 9 mins during peak hours, and 12 mins during off-peak hours.

Changi Airport station has two underground East-West Line platforms in an island platform arrangement, both used alternately for train turnarounds. Apart from stone benches and train service information boards, this station is also equipped with flight information displays (arrivals and departures from Terminals 2 & 3), and a list of hotels and their nearest MRT stations.

East West Line train services operate as shuttle service between Tanah Merah and Changi Airport, necessitating a cross-platform transfer at Tanah Merah station for passengers heading towards other destinations. Train frequencies are 7 – 9 mins during peak hours, and 12 mins during off-peak hours.

The station is also unique in having its ticket concourses on the same level as the platforms. Both East and West ends of the station connect to Changi Airport Terminals 2 and 3 respectively, with a Passenger Service Centre each for the benefit of passengers’ queries.

Additionally, a linkbridge spans above the station platform, offering an unpaid corridor allowing pedestrians to commute between Terminal 2 and 3 without entering paid areas of the station.

Changi Airport MRT station has two exits at each end of the station. Both exits offer barrier-free accessibility for the disabled, with lift access in addition to escalators, also for the benefit of passengers travelling with bulky luggage.

MRT Bus Bridging Service

In the event of a MRT service disruption affecting Changi Airport station, MRT Bridging Buses may be activated to ply affected stretches of the East West Line. In which case, the buses can be boarded from the following bus stops:

In the event of a large-scale rail disruption affecting multiple stations, a special bridging bus service may be activated in addition to the usual bus bridging services.

Passenger Usage Patterns

Serving the Passenger Terminal Buildings of Singapore Changi International Airport, the station encounters moderate passenger traffic throughout most of the day.

Construction

Kumagai-Sembawang Joint Venture was awarded Contract 504 involving the construction of Changi Airport stations and tunnels. Construction work involved the challenge of deep excavation works right next to nearby developments, as well as constructing the station’s two large glass atria.

Brief History

With Changi Airport fully relying on bus and taxi connections since its opening, there was no immediate need for rail connections given the relative ease of travelling the short 20-kilometre journey to the City, with buses linking the Airport to other MRT stations in the East (Bedok, Tampines and Pasir Ris) and express bus routes to the City. The construction of Singapore Expo along the line spurred the decision to extend the line to Changi Airport via Expo.

Train services on the Changi Airport Branch line began on 10 January 2001 between Tanah Merah and Expo, as a shuttle service. When Changi Airport station was opened on 8 February 2002, through services from Boon Lay commenced after the full opening, with alternate Eastbound trains terminating at either Pasir Ris or Changi Airport. Due to substantially lower demand on the Branch line as compared to Simei, Tampines and Pasir Ris, train services were reverted to a shuttle service between Tanah Merah and Changi Airport since July 2003.

Initially numbered EW29 on the rail map, the station code was changed to CG2 in June 2003. That code is now used for Joo Koon Station.

Future Developments

Thomson-East Coast Line Extension

Announced in the Land Transport Master Plan 2040 in May 2019, the present East West Line Changi Branch Line from Changi Airport to Tanah Merah will be converted to be part of the Thomson-East Coast Line Extension by around 2040.
