Transitioning of Buses to BCM
The rollout of the Bus Contracting Model has brought along some complications in terms of bus ownership structure, and are elaborated further in the abovementioned articles. In general, all SG-plated buses are government-owned, except for a few buses (SG400x-series) offered to LTA as a trial. LTA also owns buses formerly purchased under the
Bus Service Enhancement Programme which bear SBS- or SMB- prefixes. These government-owned buses are then leased to all bus operators for the provision of public bus services.
For buses that remain under the ownership of the legacy operators (SBS Transit or SMRT Buses), the LTA leases these buses from the operators by paying an availability fee that is equivalent to the depreciation value of these buses. The financial cost of doing so is equivalent to the depreciation value of these buses.

All 9 ZF Ecolife Citaros (SMB139U, SMB140P, SMB141L, SMB142J, SMB143G, SMB144D, SMB145B, SMB146Z & SMB147X) were registered in March 2011, the sole ZF Ecomat Citaro (SMB136C) was registered in March 2010 while the remaining 1145 Voith DIWA Citaros were progressively registered between April 2011 and December 2017.
I have ridden on the 8 ZF Ecolife Citaros fitted with the CFMS (SMB139U, SMB140P, SMB142J, SMB143G, SMB144D, SMB145B, SMB146Z & SMB147X) but I never got a chance to ride or step onboard the sole ZF Ecolife Citaro that was never fitted with the CFMS (SMB141L) as it had already been converted to a full-time training bus by the time I took my first ride on the SMRT-spec Citaros in 2014. Coincidentally, SMB141L was the only ZF Ecolife Citaro in SG I never got a chance to ride or step onboard at all as I have stepped onboard but never rode on the sole ZF Ecomat Citaro (SMB136C) in January 2026 during the Singapore Art Week 2026 and have ridden on the 8 ZF Ecolife Citaros fitted with the CFMS (SMB139U, SMB140P, SMB142J, SMB143G, SMB144D, SMB145B, SMB146Z & SMB147X) after their respective mid-life refurbishment but before the opening of Buangkok ITH.
The one-off bus registered as SG4005Z was not only the only BYD K9RC/D9RC chassis ever built in the world, but the one-off bus registered as SG4005Z was also the only bus in the world which was bodied with a one-off Gemilang Bodywork designed specifically for the only BYD K9RC/D9RC chassis ever built in the world. The one-off bus registered as SG4005Z has since been de-registered in 2023 & scrapped in November 2025 despite its historical significance of being the only bus in Singapore and the world to be built on the BYD K9RC/D9RC chassis and bodied with a one-off Gemilang Bodywork designed specifically for the only BYD K9RC/D9RC chassis ever built in the world.
I am very grateful as I rode on SG4005Z twice during its trial on SBS Transit Bus Service 800 back in March 2023.
