Gul Circle MRT Station (EW30) is an above-ground station along the East West Line (EWL). It is located along Tuas Road, near the junction with Tuas Avenue 3 / Gul Circle.

The station was constructed as part of the Tuas West Extension of the EWL. It takes its name from the nearby road of the same name, which serves the Gul industrial area. It is also the first elevated stacked interchange station to be built in Singapore, with two unused platform provisions for a planned branch line to Tuas South. The station ceiling rises 33 metres above ground – about the height of a 10-storey Housing Board block, making Gul Circle the tallest elevated station in Singapore.

The station serves industries in the vicinity of Tuas Road, such as Tuas Avenue 3 / 5 and Gul Circle / Cres.

Gul Circle station has four elevated East West Line platforms arranged in two stacked island platforms. Train services to Tuas Link use the upper platform, while train services to Pasir Ris use the lower platform. Unused platforms at each level are reserved for a future line extension to Tuas South.

The station is built with a barrel vault roof design similar to other stations between Tuas Link and Pioneer, and many other overground stations along the Eastern side of the East West Line. The large curved roof does away with support columns for a more specious feel and easy navigation at platform level.

Concourse

The station has a ticket concourse located at Level 2.

A link bridge across Tuas Road connects to two exits on either side of the road.

Station Amenities

  • Public Toilets & Retail Shops at Concourse level (L2)
  • Bicycle racks at station exits
  • Top Up Kiosks

Exits

Built in-between two carriageways of Tuas Road, Gul Circle MRT station has one ground-level exit on both sides of the road, linked to the ticket concourse level by a pedestrian overpass. All exits offer barrier-free accessibility for the disabled.

Track Layout

As provisions for a future branch line to Tuas South, Platforms C and D are not open for passenger service. While tracks and platform screen doors have been installed, the electrified third rail has not been installed.

At the west end of the station, scissors crossovers on both the upper and lower platform levels provide access from the main line to the future branch line. Rail buffers physically isolate the unused platforms from the main line.

The rail viaducts at Platforms C and D end just east of the station.

Passenger Usage Patterns

Serving the Jurong and Tuas industrial areas, the station’s demand fluctuates with the peak periods, with moderate demand at most times and high demand during the peak hours.

Construction

Contract 1688 (C1688) for the construction of Gul Circle Station and associated 2.8km of MRT viaducts along the Tuas West Extension was awarded to Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co Ltd at a contract sum of S$190 million in November 2011. The civil engineering contractor had also been involved in constructing the Circle Line and Downtown Line Stages 1 and 2.

Gul Circle station was constructed as part of the $3.5 billion, 7.5-kilometre Tuas West extension, a fully elevated extension with four stations and a new train depot in Tuas.

The working name for Gul Circle station was Tuas Station.

        This is possibly because:
        1. The lines were meant for the new Cross Island Line Stage 3, which is still under planning. It is also possible that Gul Circle is the terminus of the Cross Island Line, since Platforms C and D end just right after the station.
        2. The platforms were, highly possibly, meant for the Tuas South Extension. There were plans to extend train services from Joo Koon to Tuas Link, and from Gul Circle to Tuas South. The extension towards North was successful, however, there was not enough development around the area at that time, so eventually the plans for Tuas South were cancelled. The current solution is: to use buses.

Ok, so this is the actual thing that I want to say apart from those 3 comments: I have a feeling that the unused platforms c and d might be used for the cross island line. ?
