Service 674 offers residents of Tengah a direct peak-hour service to the Central Business District. This increases convenience and offers greater connectivity for residents, who would otherwise have to commute via feeder bus and transfer to the rail network.

Between Plantation Crescent and Anson Road, the services plies non-stop along trunk roads and expressways, via Bukit Batok Rd, Jurong Town Hall Road and AYE.

This service was introduced under the Bus Connectivity Enhancement Programme (BCEP), which promises to introduce more bus services, including peak-hour express bus services.

If the eves of Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Chinese New Year fall on a weekday, the Evening Peak departures will be brought forward to the afternoon. Revised departure times will be provided by the operator closer to the affected date.

Perhaps they should let 674 operate on weekends too, so as to prevent future incidents with #tengahyappers.

Since the first and last stop is very close to Tengah Interchange, buses can layover at Tengah Interchange, without having to come from Bulim Depot, so Tower Transit can just take buses from the 3 services (870, 871 and 992) and once they are back from the evening peak hour trips or the morning ones, they can start serving the 3 services, without having to waste time and resources. Although there are only a few double deck buses in the interchange (870 and 992 only), Tower Transit can deploy more DDs there.

So in Tengah’s case, bus came before MRT, way before MRT (am talking about the potential Seletar Holland Line that is not yet officially announced although already speculated by many netizens), in terms of direct connection to the city centre.

I foresee 674 to be the preferred public transport route between Tengah and the city centre, so much so that this route will eventually run using all double decker buses, and eventually have many many trips (similar to city direct bus service 654 with 6 trips in the morning and 3 trips in the evening). Even after the Jurong Region Line opens (simply because JRL does not connect to the city centre, need to change to EWL at Jurong East).

The potential Seletar Holland Line, even if announced next year 2025, will only be ready at around 2038, since it takes about 13 years to build a MRT line (from planning to construction to installation to commissioning).

Therefore, the city direct bus service 674 is the most major bus route for Tengah residents, and it will remain as such at least until the potential Seletar Holland Line opens at around 2038 and people switch to the potential Seletar Holland Line after one or two years.

So, minimally, can expect city direct bus service 674 to be heavily utilised from around 2025 as more and more initial residents move into Tengah, until about 2039 when the potential Seletar Holland Line opens and people switch over.

Overall, it will be a good 15 years of heavy usage. The profitability of this bus service is there, and perhaps the authorities may want to match the profitability with higher quality buses deployed to run this bus service.

    Regards,
    Mr Tan Jun Wei
