SBS/SBS Transit Mercedes-Benz O405GN (Volgren) Demonstrator – SBS999U

In 1996, Singapore Bus Services (SBS) brought in a demonstrator Mercedes-Benz O405G with a modified Volgren CR221LD bodywork. It was registered as SBS999U. Back then, SBS was solely operating double-deck buses as high-capacity buses, and was exploring the possibility of having bendy buses in its fleet. SBS999U was one of two bendy buses brought in for evaluation, the other being SBS998Y (a ‘puller’ Volvo B10MA).

SBS999U was equipped with the 288-horsepower turbocharged Mercedes-Benz OM447hLA engine, fitted to the four-speed automatic ZF Ecolife 4HP590 gearbox. The chassis were built in Germany and bodied by Volgren in Australia (a modified Volgren CR221), and shipped to Singapore completely built up (CBU). Roof-mounted air-conditioning was supplied by Denso, while the Electronic Display Signage (EDS) was a Mobitec, of a flip-dot design.

The trial was unsuccessful and no further purchases were made. The two articulated buses were sold to New Zealand in 2006.
