The Nissan Diesel U31RCN was one of three variants of the Nissan Diesel U31 citybus brought in by Trans-Island Bus Services (TIBS) from Japan, following the U31F and U31SCN. 50 buses of the type entered service in 1993, and deliveries were allocated to both TIBS and the City Shuttle Service (CSS), which was then a subsidiary of TIBS.
Between the 50 buses, two specifications emerged: Original Air-conditioned (OAC) buses with full-sized windows (26 units), and Non-air-conditioned (NAC) buses with vertically-sliding windows (24 units), to give commuters a choice between buses. Eventually, when AC buses were becoming standard, air-conditioning units were retrofitted onto existing NAC buses, earning them the designation Converted Air-conditioned (CAC).
All units entered service with the LAWO flip-dot matrix type Electronic Display Sign (EDS) on the front and side. Most units were retired after their 17-year statutory lifespan; several units were refurbished and were granted a lifespan extension of two years.

- Original Aircon: CSS178K – CSS187J & TIB362M – TIB377X (26 units)
- Non-Aircon (later Converted Aircon): CSS188G – CSS211Y (24 units)
Following the decline and eventual withdrawal of all CSS routes, all of the Nissan Diesel U31RCN buses registered with CSS plates were transferred to the SMRT fleet. Among these buses, some were re-registered with the TIB-prefixed registration plates associated.

TIB376Z was used as a static display for “Museum on Wheels” at Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Primary School after retirement from SMRT Buses. It has since been scrapped following the expansion of Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Primary School.
