SBS Transit bus engulfed in flames on PIE

A SBS Transit bus was burnt down on the Pan-Island Expressway on 13 February 2026.

The Mercedes-Benz Citaro bus was an off service bus, likely returning to Bukit Batok Bus Depot, when it caught fire.

Videos circulating online show the bus engulfed in flames on the road shoulder of PIE near exit 24, with thick black smoke can be seen rising as the fire was seen spread across the entire bus.

Another photo shows the bare structure of the bus after the fire was put out by firefighters.

The incident occured at 11:45am, which caused multiple lanes to be a closed off to traffic and a massive congestion tailing back all the way to Eng Neo Avenue. With only one lane passable to traffic, congestion ensued into the evening peak hours.

At around 5pm, the burnt wreckage of the bus was lifted up by a crane and transported away to a corner of Bukit Batok Bus Depot.

In 2013, a similar incident occured when an off-service Volvo B10M bus (SBS1965K) was making its way to Shenton Way Bus Terminal in the morning when it caught fire.

So far: SBS6145C, SBS6132P, SBS6093T, SBS6403H, SG1226Y and now SBS6840D are scrapped. No way SBS6840D will be repaired, it had been reduce to a skeleton. So far 5 Citaros are scrapped and this would be the 6. What a unfortunate way to go. Not too long ago SBS8743M a Euro V Scania & SG5412A a Volvo B9TL Batch 4 caught fire and were scrapped as well. SG5412A being the first B9TL Wright to be scrapped. Luckily no one was in SBS6840D, and the BC escape unharmed

    SBS6840D was registered on 2 February 2015.

Projected lifespan expiry date of 1 February 2032.

Burnt in fire on 13 February 2026.

Thats 64.91% into its projected lifespan.

Confirmed will be write off, and sent to scrap.

The fire loss of SBS6840D, a Mercedes-Benz Citaro, represents a major write-off of 35.09% of its 17-year lifespan. With a purchase price of roughly $500,000, the remaining 2,179 days of lost service equate to a residual book value of about $175,450.

Just saying. Anyway, pretty sure we have many spare buses, to be able to assign a replacement bus easily.
