SBS Transit bus engulfed in flames on PIE

A SBS Transit bus was burnt down on the Pan-Island Expressway on 13 February 2026.

The Mercedes-Benz Citaro bus was an off service bus, likely returning to Bukit Batok Bus Depot, when it caught fire.

Videos circulating online show the bus engulfed in flames on the road shoulder of PIE near exit 24, with thick black smoke can be seen rising as the fire was seen spread across the entire bus.

Another photo shows the bare structure of the bus after the fire was put out by firefighters.

The incident occured at 11:45am, which caused multiple lanes to be a closed off to traffic and a massive congestion tailing back all the way to Eng Neo Avenue. With only one lane passable to traffic, congestion ensued into the evening peak hours.

At around 5pm, the burnt wreckage of the bus was lifted up by a crane and transported away to a corner of Bukit Batok Bus Depot.

In 2013, a similar incident occured when an off-service Volvo B10M bus (SBS1965K) was making its way to Shenton Way Bus Terminal in the morning when it caught fire.

Luckily it got engulfed on the open expressway. Imagine the chaos and panic, if this has happened inside the enclosed space of the bus interchange or depot, where it can cause much more severe damage to the surrounding assets and property.

RIP SBS6840D. Probably had issues during routine service, thats why had to go Off Svc to depot, and that’s when whatever issues truly did go haywire. At least no one was hurt during its self-cremation. You will be missed 6840

False lmao. Bus finished it’s 74 shift normally, OS-ed at HG INT to go back BBDEP.

Always been the case for 74 and 147 BBDEP slot.

I remember 6840 to be in particularly bad condition. I regularly take this bus on 74, and it did seem to have some weird noises and jerkiness from the engine and transmission. Since it has been on 74 its whole life and it being an extremely high volume route, it’s probably been abused quite a bit.

Was indeed on 74 that fateful morning, on split shift.
