Platforms at Woodlands North RTS station will be based on the Spanish solution, with a central platform for boarding passengers, and two side platforms for alighting passengers.

Departure Flow (towards Bukit Chagar, Malaysia)

Before entering the station, passengers heading toward Malaysia would have cleared both Malaysia & Singapore customs at the adjacent CIQ building. The boarding platform serves trains on both sides, and passengers can board trains on either platform.

Arrival Flow (from Bukit Chagar, Malaysia)

Passengers arriving from Malaysia would have already cleared both Singapore & Malaysia customs at Bukit Chagar, and can directly exit the station upon alighting from the train.

Construction

Contract T232 – Construction of Stations, Tunnels and CIQ Building for Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link was awarded to Penta-Ocean Construction Co Ltd at a contract value of $932,800,000 in November 2020. The tender was called by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) back in January 2018. The contract covers the construction of the RTS Link Woodlands North station, tunnels and the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) building in Singapore.

Contract T235 – Construction of Viaducts and Tunnels for Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link was called by LTA in September 2018 and will be awarded in the first quarter of 2021.

The groundbreaking ceremony for RTS Link construction in Singapore was held on 22 January 2021 at the site of the RTS Link Woodlands North station. Passenger service is expected to commence in end 2026.

The RTS Link Woodlands North Station will be constructed underground at a maximum depth of 28 metres. There will be three stories, with two basement levels and an underground linkway to the CIQ building. The RTS Link Woodlands North Station and CIQ building are approximately 10 times the size of a typical MRT station. These facilities will be adjacent to Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) Woodlands North MRT station and be seamlessly connected via an underground concourse. The tunnels will be connected to the viaduct that crosses the Straits of Johor at a height of 25 metres.

The Malaysia MRT Corporation has projected that the RTS Link will absorb 35% of the Causeway traffic.

    Currently, there are 4 Singaporean public bus routes at the Causeway, namely: 160, 170, 170X, 950. 35% × 4 = 1.4.

950 can be withdrawn once the RTS Link is ready.
The other 0.4 can be 170X. 160 and 170 can do mutual route swap between Kranji MRT station and Woodlands Causeway.

The above are my recommendation on bus route amendment when the RTS Link is ready in end-2026.

I see a potential weakness in the way customs are set-up (i.e. customs at the departure end both ways, exit freely on arrival), in that every single arriving train needs to be thoroughly checked and emptied before departure, else a passenger could, accidentally or deliberately, bounce back to their point of origin, thus being in the “wrong” country for immigration purposes.

Considering the high frequencies of the service and the short travel time, and the need to more thoroughly check the train compared to other terminal stations (since this is not just a service issue but an immigration one), it feels like this would add a lot of dead time for little good reason, when alternatives exist: e.g. customs co-located at the arrival end instead (where passengers would then need to be checked no matter what), or have all customs located at one end (so the train service itself is effectively domestic, avoiding the extra complication)

Don’t worry la. Even if take back and forth, at most incur a hefty fine if caught. Pretty sure by then the RTS Link will have their own maximum travel time limit to prevent overriding one.

In terms of border security, once “leave” country A, have to “enter” country B. Otherwise, it would be equivalent to entering the transit area with no intention to travel. The relevant laws at Changi Airport will probably apply at the RTS Link.
