The Iskandar Malaysia Bus Rapid Transit (IMBRT) is a planned bus rapid transit system in Johor, Malaysia, serving the Iskandar Malaysia region. The system is centred in Johor Bahru, with three main BRT corridors extending to Skudai, Tebrau and Iskandar Puteri.

The BRT network and its accompanying bus routes are envisioned as a means to significantly enhance public transportation coverage within the Iskandar Malaysia region from 39% to 90%, and increase public transportation modal share from 15% to 40% by 2025.

The project is being administered by the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA). As of 2021, a pilot trial is underway, and the system was due for completion in 2023.

However, the network plan was shelved in May 2024.

Network

In Phase 1 of the IMBRT project, threeΒ main corridors of dedicated bus lanes (or β€˜trunk routes’) spanning 51 km will be built, forming the backbone of the BRT network. These lines are dubbed the Skudai Line, Tebrau Line, and Iskandar Puteri Line. The terminus of each line will be a transport hub for bus connections outside of the BRT corridors, and incorporated with transit-oriented development.

Stations and terminals will be wheelchair-accessible and feature retail outlets, ticketing machines, surau and toilets. Currently, Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART) vehicles are envisioned for use on trunk routes, and are on trial as of 2021.

In addition, the BRT corridors are complemented by 55 feeder and 44 direct services, bringing the total network coverage to 2,051km or approximately 90% of the populated area of Iskandar Malaysia. These are planned to be served by~8 m midibuses and ~12 m regular buses respectively.

The implementation of BRT will also complement and offer transfers to/from other transport infrastructure projects in the Johor region, such as the Singapore–Johor Bahru Rapid Transit System (RTS Link), and theΒ Gemas-Johor Baru double-tracking project.

IMBRT Pilot Testing Programme

Main Article: IMBRT Pilot Testing Programme

A three-month pilot testing programme was launched on 8 April 2021.

As part of the pilot, nine bus suppliersΒ will conduct a demonstration of the latest green bus technologies includingΒ electricΒ andΒ biodiesel. Buses being tested range from 6 metres to 32 metres, and trial running would take place along designated routes in the Iskandar Puteri region.

Route List

The routes of 42 feeder and 26 direct bus services were initially announced in 2018, as indicated in the following route table. The most updated figure (April 2021) has revised this to 55 feeder and 44 direct services.
