All public bus services to be Wheelchair Accessible from 17 October 2019

All public bus services in Singapore are wheelchair accessible starting from Thursday, 17 October 2019. This follows the introduction of wheelchair-accessible minibuses on Bus Service 825, the last public bus route to not be served by wheelchair-accessible buses.

A total of four wheelchair-accessible BYD C6 midibuses have been leased to SMRT Buses by BYD (Singapore) Pte Ltd, and these buses would be progressively introduced to Bus Service 825.

As Singapore gears towards a 100% Wheelchair-Accessible Bus Fleet by 2020, the Government aims to phase out all non-Wheelchair-Accessible Buses by 2020, a milestone of the Land Transport Masterplan 2040. Currently, only 2 non-WAB models are in operation: Volvo B10TL and Mercedes-Benz O405G (Hispano Habit).

Bus Service 825

Connecting Lentor Estate with Yio Chu Kang Bus Interchange and MRT station, Bus Service 825 is the only public bus route that is operated with minibuses, with three buses operating during the peak periods and two buses operating during off-peak periods. Previously, wheelchair-inaccessible Mitsubishi Rosa minibuses served the route.

The recent intake of four fully-electric BYD C6 midibuses by SMRT Buses would offer wheelchair accessibility on Bus Service 825. Buses are equipped with a wheelchair lift stowed underneath the entrance door; the first public buses known to be equipped with wheelchair lifts.

As of 16 October 2019, two BYD C6 buses are registered: PC7991M and PC8656A.

For a public bus service to be considered wheelchair-accessible, it requires that: a) at least 50% of the buses plying the route are wheelchair-accessible; and b) at least 80% of the bus stops along the route are wheelchair-accessible. As such, older minibuses are still expected to ply Bus Service 825 until all are BYD C6 midibuses are ready for service.
