Tanah Merah MRT Station (EW4/CG) is an above-ground station along the East West Line (EWL), and serves as the transfer station with the EWL’s Changi Airport Branch line. It is built along New Upper Changi Road, between the junctions of Bedok South Avenue 3 and Bedok Road.

The station name, which means red earth in Malay, is derived from the red lateritic cliffs along the coast that was once visible from the sea (most of which were leveled for land reclamation works). The station serves the Tanah Merah area, a hilly residential area with many condominiums, private houses, and several schools.

Tanah Merah station offers an interchange between mainline East West Line train services and Changi Airport Branch line services to Changi Airport. A fourth track and third platform was added to the Northside of the station for Pasir Ris-bound train services under the Tanah Merah Modification Project, in which works to commission the new east-bound platform would be complete by 8 December 2025. This would free up an additional track for the Changi Airport Branch line, enabling trains to operate more frequently.

Construction of a new platform and additional rail viaducts at Tanah Merah station (Contract T315) was projected to be completed in 2024, later delayed to end-2025. Civil contractor Lum Chang lists an updated completion year of 2025 [Link], while LTA expects to decommission a 1 km section of rail viaduct near Tanah Merah in 2026. [Link]

As part of the Thomson-East Coast Line Extension (TELe), the existing East West Line Changi Airport Branch line (Tanah Merah—Expo—Changi Airport) will be converted to be part of the Thomson-East Coast Line by the Mid-2030s. As such, Tanah Merah will be the future terminus of the TEL, with the station code EW4TE35.

Tanah Merah station has six elevated East-West Line platforms arranged in three island platforms, serving four tracks. While the outermost tracks are used for regular EWL services (Platforms A and F), the southern middle track is used for the turnaround of Changi Airport Branch Line trains and is served by Platforms D and E. Train frequencies on the Airport branch are 7 – 9 mins during peak hours, and 12 mins during off-peak hours.

Platforms B & C are closed for works as part of the Tanah Merah Modification Project.

The station is built with a modified barrel vault roof design used at many other stations along the Eastern side of the East West Line. The curved roof spans three platforms and is supported by two rows of pillars on each island platform.

Passenger Usage Patterns

Serving schools and residential areas in the vicinity, Tanah Merah station encounters moderate demand from students and residents in the area. More people use the station for transfers between the mainline and Changi Airport branch.

Construction

Brief History

The station opened on 4 November 1989 in its present form, with two island platforms for East West Line services in both directions and an unused middle track. Train services on the Changi Airport Branch line began on 10 January 2001 between Tanah Merah and Expo, as a shuttle service.

When Changi Airport station was opened on 25 February 2002, through services from Boon Lay commenced after the full opening, with alternate Eastbound trains terminating at either Pasir Ris or Changi Airport. Due to substantially lower demand on the Branch line as compared to Simei, Tampines and Pasir Ris, Changi Airport Branch Line train services were reverted to a shuttle service between Tanah Merah and Changi Airport since July 2003.

Tanah Merah Modification Project

A third platform and fourth track were constructed at Tanah Merah station to improve waiting times on the Changi Airport branch line. Previously, Changi Airport bound services operated out of the middle track. A fourth track was constructed north of the station for Eastbound East West Line services, leaving the middle two tracks for train services to Changi Airport, hence allowing trains to arrive and depart at the station at shorter intervals.

The project was first announced by LTA on 25 August 2014, with a scheduled completion date of 2024. This was later delayed to 2026.

In addition to the new platform, a new underpass underneath New Upper Changi Road on the East end of the station is also being constructed, leading to 2 new Exits (Exit 3 near Tanah Merah Kechil Avenue & Exit 4 near the Glades Condo).

Contract T315 – Addition and Alteration Works to Existing Tanah Merah Station and Existing Viaducts was awarded to Lum Chang Building Contractors Pte Ltd for S$325 million in October 2016. The reconfigured viaducts will connect the East West Line to the East Coast Integrated Depot.

This will be the second MRT station in Singapore to have tracks added to its original configuration, the first being Jurong East. Enhancement works commenced in 2016, and were originally expected to be completed in 2024.

Future Development – Thomson-East Coast Line Extension

Announced in the Land Transport Master Plan 2040 in May 2019, the present East West Line Changi Branch Line from Changi Airport to Tanah Merah will be converted to be part of the Thomson-East Coast Line Extension by around 2040. This was later revised to Mid-2030s.

Modification works would be done under Contract T3206 – Addition and Alteration to Changi Airport Line.

Major Incidents

On 15 December 2020, a 29-year-old Bangladeshi worker was killed at the construction site which was part of Contract T315 – Addition and Alteration Works to Existing Tanah Merah Station and Existing Viaducts. The man and his co-workers were extracting sheet piles when a part of a sheet pile broke and fell on him. He was pronounced dead at the scene by attending paramedics.

Changi Airport MRT station cannot be closed entirely temporarily, because that’s the main connecting line to and from Changi Airport since the MRT to Changi Airport opened in 2002.

Therefore, the only solution is to close Changi Airport MRT station half at a time, which means: one platform at a time, to do retrofication works.

Harbourfront MRT station on the circle line is currently a terminal station, and only one platform is actually used for boarding and alighting purpose, whereas the other platform is occassionally used for alighting purpose only. Changi Airport MRT station can just copy the current Harbourfront MRT station (circle line) method during the transition phase from EWL to TEL.

Meanwhile, Tanah Merah to Expo section can simply close entirely temporarily, cuz got DTL as the alternative MRT route.

They only really need to operate a single train to run only between Expo and Changi Airport during the transition phase from EWL to TEL, while the Tanah Merah to Expo section close entirely temporarily and the Expo to Changi section close half at a time temporarily, during the transition phase.

So, essentially, during the transition phase where only half of Changi Airport MRT station is open, and probably only one train running, that section from Expo to Changi Airport will have the waiting time equivalent to the to and fro duration (approximately 8 minutes) and the stopping time at the two stations (approximately 2 minutes each, 4 minutes in total). Altogether = 12 minutes waiting time.

It’s no doubt a compromise, but this is the best solution. If only keep half of the Expo to Changi Airport section running, the waiting time is 12 minutes. If it is Tanah Merah to Changi Airport keep half running, the waiting time will be 2 times longer (24 minutes).

With that, the following is my prediction on the ultimate arrangement during the transition phase from EWL to TEL.
