Buona Vista MRT Station (EW21/CC22) is an interchange station along the East-West Line (EWL) and Circle Line (CCL). Located near the junction of North Buona Vista Road and Commonwealth Road West, it was the second elevated-underground interchange station built, after Paya Lebar station.

The station is named after the surrounding area which carries the same name – translated to “good sight” in Italian, the Buona Vista area is hilly, which could have inspired the name.

Buona Vista Station serves a mix of commercial and residential developments, with The Star Vista mall and Rochester Mall near the station, and HDB estates at Ghim Moh and Holland Vista. It also serves Biopolis, a biomedical research and development centre and part of the one-north business park, a developing area for the R&D and high technology cluster.

Buona Vista station’s elevated East West Line platform level has two platforms in an island platform arrangement. Similar to many older stations along the Western side of the East West Line, a simple flat roof shelters the platform level, and the station is painted with a single base colour, which is Light Green for this station.

A set of escalators, stairs and lifts connect to both the EWL concourse level (L3) for exiting the station, and transfer linkway (L2) for transfers to the Circle Line.

The underground Circle Line platform has two platforms in an island platform arrangement. The platforms are wider to accommodate more passengers at CCL interchange stations such as Buona Vista.

Concourse

East West Line and Circle Line station concourses are at Level 3 and Basement 1 respectively.

Both EWL and CCL stations are connected by a transfer linkway within paid areas. Escalators and lifts lead from the CCL Concourse level (Basement 1) to the Transfer floor (Level 2) where another set of escalators and lifts connect with the EWL platform.

The CCL concourse level is also equipped with an unpaid corridor which allows pedestrians to use the station as an underpass crossing underneath North Buona Vista Road, without having to enter the rail network.

CCL Art in Transit: “The Tree of Life” by Gilles Massot

Scenic tropical greenery along South Buona Vista were the earliest impressions Massot had of Singapore when he first arrived in 1981. This strong sense of nature and greenery and its association to the name Buona Vista inspired this artwork. Situated close to Rochester and Nepal Parks, The Tree of Life is an attempt to bring the over-ground landscape to the underground station. This eucalyptus tree, though not an indigenous species, has been selected as the subject for its shape and texture of the bark, as well as the colour to complement the colour scheme of the station. Dimension and movement created through the use of tiling technique brings life to the station space.

Civil Defence shelter

Buona Vista CCL station is one of eleven stations along the Circle Line designated as Civil Defence (CD) shelters, which will be activated in times of national emergency. Apart from reinforced construction, the stations are designed and equipped with facilities to ensure the shelter environment is tolerable for all shelterees during shelter occupation. These facilities include protective blast doors, decontamination facilities, ventilation systems, power and water supply systems and a dry toilet system.

Passenger Usage Patterns

It also benefits shopping malls, as well as offices and residential developments in the vicinity, hence passenger traffic through this station is relatively high.

The station is used by passengers switching to the circle line to go to NUH-hospital. I could not find any guide as to how, some one who reaches the station from Jurong East can find and take the lifts to the circle line mrt lobby with a wheel chair.
I find many stations have no clear signage to switch from mrt-mrt or mrt-lrt.
Another bad one is Bukit Panjang LRT to Chua Chu Kang MRT…i ciukd not assist an elderly as i could not see where the lifts were…and if the person gets a fliggt if steps towards a wrong direction…it woukd be many steps to climb to reach the MRT platform!!!…no lifts are available if a wrong turn has been made!! Sorry for the elderly who have weak knees and have poor mobility . The building design is very bad without thought to elderly and the sick!!!

LTA should consider make a bus interchange around this MRT for at least 14 service with 35 parking lots and Ghim Moh and Buona Vista terminals can close for good

I’m not sure if there is enough space though. Plus, there is a land previously vacated by the temporary market and food centre next to Ghim Moh Bus Terminal, so LTA/MND should replace the roadside terminal with a bus interchange. As for Buona Vista, I feel that there are more parking lots for the eight existing bus services and this should not be much of a problem.
