Civil Defence shelter

Siglap station is one of seven stations along the Thomson-East Coast Line (East Coast stretch) designated as Civil Defence (CD) shelters, which will be activated in times of national emergency. Apart from reinforced construction, the stations are designed and equipped with facilities to ensure the shelter environment is tolerable for all shelterees during shelter occupation. These facilities include protective blast doors, decontamination facilities, ventilation systems, power and water supply systems and a dry toilet system.

The other CD shelters are Tanjong Rhu, Marine Parade, Marine Terrace, Bedok South, Bayshore and Sungei Bedok stations.

Art in Transit: “The Darkness which Reveals” by Melissa Tan

Kampong Siglap is believed to have been founded between 1819 and 1822 by Tok Lasam from the city of Pontianak in modern-day Indonesia. The name ‘Siglap’, derived from the Malay word ‘Gelap’ which means darkness that conceals, may be traced to a 19th century solar eclipse that occurred in tandem with his arrival by sea under the cover of darkness.

The artwork references the method by which the terrain of the moon is studied, utilising mapping data to show the moon’s uneven surface, the play of light and shadows, and transmuting these shadows into perforations on the metal plates. Just as the moon reflects sunlight, the reflective metal mirrors this phenomenon, providing an illusion of iridescence.

Thus, darkness is reconsidered, not as concealing but as the revealing of information and fragmented stories of Tok Lasam’s arrival.

Gift of Art: “Journey Across Sunlight: A Siglap Mosaic” by Brian Gothong Tan

Donated by Lim Eng Chong, 2024

Journey Across Sunlight: A Siglap Mosaic is an artwork commissioned by Lim Eng Chong and other Old Victorians (an endearing term for alumni from Victoria School and Victoria Junior College) for Victoria School and the wider Siglap community. Victoria School has nurtured numerous luminaries in the cultural and artistic fields; many of whom are spotlighted in Journey.

Designed by award-winning artist Brian Gothong Tan, himself an Old Victorian, this glass mosaic artwork was inspired by and features elements from the works of Old Victorian luminaries and Singapore Cultural Medallion recipients Dr Iskandar Jalil’s ceramics and Professor Edwin Thumboo’s poetry. “Iskandar Blue”, a tone of blue commonly featured in Iskandar Jalil’s internationally acclaimed ceramics, fills the background of the artwork upon which various motifs and a fragment of poetry by Edwin Thumboo relating to the school and Siglap are layered.

Victoria at Siglap by Edwin Thumboo reads:
Across the sunlight in the straits,
three generations knew
That when you move, you take us all with you.

Indeed, through Journey Across Sunlight: A Siglap Mosaic, the Old Victorians move and take forward with them the current and future students and Siglap community.

Exits and entrances should try to serve people from Siglap Road and Upper East Coast Road.

Distance from the station to Upper East Coast in a straight line is about 350m. That’s going to be a very lengthy exit.
