Service 42 is a residential route serving the private residential estates of Kembangan, Siglap and Opera Estate, connecting them to Kembangan MRT station along the East-West Line. The service was renumbered from Service M2 in 1997.

The route operates in a continuous loop fashion, with drivers taking a short break at Jalan Kembangan (Kembangan MRT) while passengers may board or alight, or stay onboard for the next journey. It is one of the few bus routes not operating from a bus interchange or terminal.

At the end of Fidelio Street, buses perform a 3-point turn at the junction with Aida Street.

Formerly operating with Dennis Dart midibuses, they were retired in 2011 and replaced by standard 12-metre buses. A BSEP fleet addition in 2014 saw the addition of a third bus to the fleet. It currently operates with a fleet of 4 buses.

I don’t know why people are modifying Service 42… as great as a connection to East Coast would be (considering that Opera Estate residents are generally much closer to East Coast/Marine Parade/Katong then Bedok/Eunos culturally and based on the places they shop/dine), its current route cannot be modified easily without destroying some critical connections, or completely ruining the route’s integrity.

If sent to Bedok, 42 will be a VERY WEIRD triple loop, then it would make sense to make a Service 221 from Bedok to run the Kembangan sector of 42, but that would be unnecessary due to the demand.

Currently, the system works fine IMHO. If die die must send a route to link Opera Estate to East Coast, Service 150 makes the most sense as its already height-restricted, as any other service being extended would take away that services High-Capacity buses. However, this is also unnecessary as many people in Opera Estate either drive or walk to Siglap Road and take 40, or Upper East Coast Road and take 10/12/13/14/16/16M.
