Introduced in 2005, Service 57 is a residential and urban route linking Bishan to Bukit Merah. From Bishan, the route passes through Toa Payoh and Thomson, continuing to the City areas of Rochor, Fullerton and Shenton Way, and then heading West towards HarbourFront, Alexandra and Depot Road.

For residents of Toa Payoh, Service 57 provides a direct bus connection to the CBD in addition to the North-South Line. It also links Depot Road with Telok Blangah and HarbourFront stations daily. Demand is fairly high throughout the day with many connections provided by this service.
