The route between JB Sentral and Taman Pulai Indah was initially served by Causeway Link route 51B, Triton JB route 505 and Kembara City route 606. When Triton JB company merged with Causeway Link in 2011, 51B and 505 were merged but retained the route number 505. 606 would cease operating sometime in the mid to late-2010s.

Service 505 was merged into T31 on 25 April 2022, under the MyBAS Johor Bahru Phase 2. The route was amended to serve Taman Universiti Bus Terminal and Jalan Pulai 19 / Jalan Pulai / Jalan Pontian Lama in both directions, along with additional stops within the Taman Pulai Indah estate.

From 1 February 2023, the route was amended to serve the Taman Universiti estate in both directions. Previously, the route only called at Taman Universiti Ter in both directions, where passengers could transfer to a feeder bus (Causeway Link 5BL) to connect within the Taman Universiti estate.
