Art in Transit: “Everyday Singapore 每日所见” by Quek Kiat Sing 郭捷忻

Shenton Way is the financial hub of Singapore. I decided to juxtapose the daily activities of the people here with our old currencies. People looking up at the Foreign Exchange Index are likened to bird watchers in the park. Hence, the bird watchers stare at the bird series currency. The Lau Pa Sat lunch crowd is a daily scene depicted too. Curiously, there are lots of joggers during lunch. Making them run after the note (junk boat series) was a humorous self-reflection I put in here. People queuing at the ATM and ticket machines can see themselves mirrored in the murals.

Many of the models in the paintings are my own family and friends. Art imitates life. ‘Everyday Singapore每日所见’ is a reflection of ourselves.

This art piece was donated by PSA International in 2022. A similar piece is also featured at Pasir Panjang MRT Station.

I saw the inside of the Shenton Way Station in a photo. I know that the Art In Transit is based on the Singapore Money Notes.

Since it will be connected to the basements of the surrounding developments, there are actually more than 3 exits for this station.
