Temporary closure of Joo Chiat Road

On Sunday, 9 April 2017, a short section of Joo Chiat Road, near the junction of Marine Parade Road and Marine Parade Central, was temporarily closed to traffic to make way for Thomson-East Coast Line excavation works. The closure was expected to last for a year but was reopened just 7 months later on 12 November 2017.

The closure of Joo Chiat Road was intended to facilitate cut-and-cover excavation work for the Thomson-East Coast MRT Line (Stage 5), expected to open in the Year 2024. The underground line closely follows the alignment of Marine Parade Road Park, heading east to Sungei Bedok.

The Joo Chiat Road junction lies above the East end of Marine Parade MRT Station. An underground retail mall will stretch east to Still Road South.

As a result of the road closure, Bus Service 16 was diverted to East Coast Road and Still Road South, calling at an additional four bus stops. The amended route also saw the skipping of five bus stops along Marine Parade Road and Joo Chiat Road.

As the pair of bus stops along Joo Chiat Road (92181 112 Katong and 98189 Opp 112 Katong) only serve Service 16, the bus stops were temporarily closed throughout the duration of the road closure.
