On 5 February 2021, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced that it would be procuring 17 two-car trains to boost the capacity of the Sengkang and Punggol LRT lines (SPLRT).
The contract (inclusive of 17 two-car trains) was awarded to Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering, Ltd and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. Consortium in February 2022 at a value of around $439 million. An additional order for 8 two-car trains was later placed by LTA in May 2023.
Aside from the train procurement, the contract also entails the provision of a signalling system, guideway system and depot equipment for the expanded Sengkang LRT depot, where all SPLRT trains are based.
These new LRT trains are the third generation of rolling stock for the SPLRT, following two earlier generations of Mitsubishi Crystal Mover LRT trains which were very similar in design. The C810 trains entered service starting in 2003, while the C810A trains progressively entered service from 2016.
When all trains are rolled out, these trains will double the number of two-car trains in the SPLRT fleet, which currently comprises 16 two-car trains and 25 one-car trains (as of Feb 2022).
These 17 new trains will progressively replace the existing one-car trains, as mentioned by LTA in February 2022.
The LTA Annual Report 2021/22 confirmed the new trains are ordered under Contract 810D – Trains, Signalling System, Guideway System and Depot Equipment For Sengkang-Punggol Light Rapid Transit Depot Expansion.
Additional Order (May 2023)
On 9 May 2023, LTA announced a further order for 8 additional two-car trains in addition to the trains ordered in January 2022 (as part of Contract 810D), valued at about $87 million.
With this, 25 new two-car trains (inclusive of 17 trains ordered in Jan 2022) would be delivered under Contract 810D in total to replace the existing 25 one-car trains.
Delivery & Rollout
Delivery for the first 17 two-car trains are expected to take place from 2024 to 2027, while the additional 8 two-car trains will be delivered from 2H 2027.
The first 2 two-car trains arrived in Singapore on 23 November 2024 for testing and commissioning at Sengkang LRT Depot.
These trains are expected to commence revenue service in Q3 2025 according a Facebook post by the Land Transport Authority in November 2024.
Train Formation
Each trainset consists of two cars coupled together. The entire trainset is identified by a two-digit number displayed on the exterior, ranging from 58 to 82. Each individual car within the trainset is then identified by an additional number (1 or 2) below the trainset number, indicating whether it is the first or second car of the set.
