Design Modifications to Volvo B5LH buses

Several modifications have been made to the interior of Volvo B5LH buses after their initial rollout on revenue service. Refinements were made to the interior to enhance the commuter experience.

Background

50 unitsĀ of theĀ Volvo B5LHĀ single-deck bus were procured by theĀ Land Transport Authority (LTA) in 2017 as part of efforts to build a more environmentally friendly public bus fleet. These buses are bodied with theĀ MCV EvoraĀ bodywork (stylized asĀ eVoRa) and entered service from December 2018.Ā Read more about the procurement process here.

These buses areĀ Euro-VI compliant and are bodied by MCV in Egypt. Also in compliance with new LTA specifications, buses are equipped with a suite of new features, such asĀ Passenger Information Display Systems (PIDS)Ā and two wheelchair bays.

Guard panels

The granny seat and the row of seats behind the exit doors are equipped with additional panels to prevent passengersā€™ feet from protruding outwards. This would prevent any accidents, especially with the front door.

Underseat Compartment

A new compartment underneath the rear-facing priority seats has been retrofitted to provide additional storage space.

Rear handlebars

Two new handlebars are installed between two pairs of rear seats and the centre aisle. Buses prior to the retrofitting did not feature this handlebar, which now assists passengers with getting in and out of these seats.

Exit door handlebar

The horizontal handlebars next to the exit doors were previously wrapped in warning stickers instructing passengers not to grab hold of them. These stickers have since been removed.

Stopping Bell

All original bus stopping bells on the Volvo B5LH buses have been replaced with new ones that no longer protrude from the surface of the yellow bell housing. This would help prevent accidental presses. A similar modification was made to all early-batch Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses with SBS Transit.

Stroller Restraint System

As part of several family-friendly initiatives, all wheelchair-accessible public buses were retrofitted with stroller restraint systems by 2020. All Volvo B5LH buses received this modification.

    What matters is seating capacity.
    More seating, better rides. šŸ™‚
Hope they will add more seats on the buses, whenever possible.
