Bus Services – Singapore

Singapore’s public buses are run by four bus operators (SBS Transit, SMRT Buses, Tower Transit, Go-Ahead Singapore,) offering affordable and convenient transport all round the island. Private bus operators offer City Direct, Premium and Free Shuttle Buses as an alternate means of travelling around.

Bus Services:

Basic Bus Services
Trunk and Feeder bus services operated by Public Transport Operators.
Basic bus services are the main form of bus services being offered in Singapore, providing daily bus connections across the island with a vast network of bus routes. There are over 300 trunk routes in Singapore, with more under planning under the Bus Services Enhancement Programme (BSEP).

Currently, basic bus services are offered by public transport operators (PTOs) SBS Transit, SMRT Buses, Tower Transit as well as Go-Ahead, each with their own areas of responsibility. They usually operate between 5:00am to 1:00am the next day, with selected routes having extended operating hours during eves of Public Holidays.

There are two main forms of basic bus services: Trunk services and Feeder services. Trunk services are spread all across the island, usually connecting between different towns. Feeder services provide localized bus connections within a single residential town.

Furthermore, Short-Trip services are scheduled departures that perform only a part of their parent service.

Feeder Bus Services:

Apart from normal Feeder Bus Services, several two-part routes which serve the Town Centre twice in a single trip to allow commuters to connect between different parts of a residential town without having to change buses were formerly branded as Townlink (for SBS Transit) and Intra-town (for SMRT Buses) services. These services were then re-branded to Feeder Bus Services for standarisation in Aug 2018.

Route Variants

Closely associated with their parent services, Route Variants serve similar catchment areas and are operated either within or outside of their parent service’s operating hours. They differ from Short Trip Services in that they are operated similar to independent trunk routes.

A few types of route variants exist. Some are supplementary routes introduced to ply crowded stretches of their parent trunk routes, operating alongside them either full-day or only during the weekday peak hours. Others operate outside of their parent service’s operating hours (e.g. weekday nights and weekends), plying slightly different routes. Other unique examples are also operated.

Short Trips

Main article: Short-Trip services

Short-Trip services are short-haul trips that operate only along a segment of their parent route and incorporate the suffix A, B, C and even W (with exceptions such as 17A or 700A which are Route Variants). Some of them (like 170A and 179A) operate like Route Variants, further blurring the two types.

A full list of Short-Trip services can be found at the main article linked above. They are also described in their parent service’s individual articles.

Terminating Trips

Terminating Trips will display a “T” suffix to their parent route.

Express & City Direct Bus Services

Express bus services incorporate express sectors along their route and charge distance-based Express fares, which are more expensive than basic fares.

Three main types of Express services exist. Full Day express services offer connections from housing estates to the City, or between housing estates. Limited-stop express services closely mirror their parent route but call at fewer bus stops along the way. SBS Transit brands their limited-stop express routes as Fast-Forward routes, before they were rebranded as Express Routes in August 2018. Finally, CBD express services are the most numerous, connecting housing estates to the Central Business District (CBD) and operating only during the peak hours.

City Direct Services introduced as part of the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP) also fall the CBD Express category. Operated by Private Bus Operators, several services are slowly being handed over to Public Transport Operator (PTO) control.
