Bus Service 160 is a cross-border trunk service linking Jurong East, Bukit Panjang and Kranji with JB Sentral in Johor Bahru, via the Johor–Singapore Causeway. Within Singapore, the route follows a largely direct alignment along major arterial roads such as Bukit Batok Road and Woodlands Road, providing a continuous north-south connection between Jurong East, Bukit Panjang, and Kranji.

Effective 15 December 2025, Service 160 is scheduled to operate through to JB Sentral Ter only between 13:00 and 15:58 on Mondays to Thursdays. Outside of this period, all trips will terminate at JB CIQ. Passengers can continue their journeys to or from JB Sentral on foot.

Although the service is operated using wheelchair-accessible buses, there are no wheelchair-accessible stops beyond Woodlands Checkpoint. As a result, wheelchair users are currently unable to use this service for cross-border travel.

According to boarding berth signage at Woodlands Checkpoint, Service 160 follows a Friday operating schedule when the eve of a public holiday falls on a weekday.

As with other cross-border routes, due to varying traffic conditions along the Johor–Singapore Causeway, travel times and service frequencies may vary significantly, especially during periods of heavy congestion such as weekday peak hours, weekends, public holidays and festive seasons.

Demand Patterns

Demand for Service 160 remains consistently high throughout the day, particularly along the cross-border sector between Kranji MRT station and Johor Bahru CIQ, which is shared with Services 170, 170X, and CW1.

Within Singapore, the service serves industrial areas along Woodlands Road and residential estates along Bukit Batok Road, where it duplicates several trunk services that operate more reliably, as they are unaffected by cross-border congestion. In these sectors, Service 160 plays a supplementary role. However, it continues to provide a direct cross-border bus option for these areas, and remains an important direct link between the Bukit Batok Road/Tengah and Woodlands Road/Sungei Kadut corridors without requiring a transfer at Bukit Panjang.

Historically, Service 160 also offered the fastest direct connections between Jurong East and Bukit Batok Road. The importance of this connection to Bukit Batok West residents, coupled with the need for more consistent local services unaffected by Causeway congestion delays, led to the introduction of Short-Trip Service 160A between Jurong East and Bukit Batok Road during peak hours in November 2018. This was followed by the launch of supplementary Service 160M in July 2020, which operated throughout the day and extended into Bukit Batok West to serve more residential areas.

In late 2023, the operating hours of Service 160A were extended to include weekday afternoons to support growing demand from new residential developments in Tengah. Connectivity between Tengah and Jurong East was further enhanced with the introduction of Bus Services 870 and 984 in November 2023 and October 2025, respectively.

Cross-Border Procedures

At both the Singapore and Malaysian checkpoints, passengers are required to alight from the bus to clear immigration procedures before continuing their journey. Card-paying passengers who re-board the same service will have their journey treated as a continuation, while boarding a different service at either checkpoint will be treated as a transfer under the fare system. Cash-paying passengers are required to retain their tickets and present them when re-boarding after immigration clearance.

At Woodlands Checkpoint towards Johor Bahru, the queues for Services 160, 170, 170X and 950 are combined to form a single common queue. Passengers will be directed to board the first available bus regardless of service number. This boarding arrangement has been in place since 20 May 2022.

Fares

Service 160 charges distance-based fares in accordance with Singapore’s standard public transport fare structure.

When boarding in Malaysia, cash payment in Malaysian ringgit is accepted at a one-to-one numerical equivalence with Singapore dollars. For example, the cash fare from Johor Bahru Checkpoint to Kranji Station is S$2.30 (as of December 2025), and a cash payment of RM2.30 is also accepted. Passengers using contactless payment modes are charged in Singapore dollars only, regardless of boarding location.

Route Limitations:

Buses deployed on cross-border routes must be registered with the Agensi Pengangkutan Awam Darat (APAD), also known as the Land Public Transport Agency (Malaysia).

Currently, several SBS Transit Mercedes-Benz Citaro & MAN A22 buses are registered for cross-border operations. Under Malaysian regulations, buses must carry relevant documents, be fitted with a third brake light at the rear, and be attached with Malaysian stickers dictating the legal speed limit.

Can but will take a long time to transfer over like 1+ years. From the bus models to the SPAD/APAD sticker and communication between tts, malaysia ministry, lta & sbs. Honestly even with the fleet switching to MAN A22 Euro V & VI, i highly doubt another operator will snatch this up just like smrt 950 as well

Tbh Only 950 should use the MAN A22 E5 while 160 & 170 can use MAN A22 E6 & Citaros, this is a good way to use all those storage buses rotting away. If some were pulled from other services, can use the E4 & E5 KUBS that are from 160 & 170 that werent retired. I am pretty sure the reason why Euro V KUBS werent use is probably due to the fact they were procured 1-2 years after the E4s, their lifespan expiry aint far off

As Majority of Ulu Pandan’s E4 KUBS are being retired, services 160/170 are not spared as most from these were retired and laid up. Serveal SG Plated Citaros are being deployed without the SPAD registration. Wonder what bus model will be the replacement when cross border resumes.

    Candidates:

Mercedes Benz 0530 Citaro(Has to be Batch 3 as they are still younger than B1 & B2)
    MAN A22 E5
MAN A22 E6(Most prefered as they are the youngest diesel SD Bus and 2 Wheelchair bays like Scania K230UB E4)

Service 170 have Mercedes Benz. Problem is that these cross border services (160,170,950) need to deploy double deckers to cater extremely high demand during Friday, sat, sun and public holidays
