LTA launches tender for next batch of 660 Electric Buses

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced the procurement tender for the latest batch of 660 electric buses. This move is part of Singapore’s ongoing efforts to transition to a cleaner, greener public transport system.

The tender, Procurement of Electric Buses (Contract PT602), was officially published today, 14 March 2025, and is open for submissions from eligible suppliers. This is also the first tender called for electric double-deck buses to have the three-door, two-staircase design.

The 660 buses comprise 360 single-deck buses and 300 double-deck buses.

According to LTA in a Facebook Post, this batch of electric buses will replace diesel buses that are reaching the end of their statutory lifespan.

Key Requirements for Bidders

To ensure compatibility with Singapore’s transport network, the LTA has set forth several critical criteria that potential suppliers must meet:

  • Compliance with Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles, Construction and Use) Rules
  • Right-hand drive electric buses
  • A configuration with one entrance and two exits
  • Low-floor bus interior
  • Provision of two wheelchair bays
  • Two staircases for double-deck bus options (Base Offer 2)

The LTA will adopt a 2-envelope bidding system, requiring tenderers to submit separate documents for pricing and technical specifications via the Government Procurement GeBIZ portal.

Driving Singapore Towards a Greener Future

This latest procurement follows the previous tender of 420 single-deck buses under Contract PT601 (Procurement of single deck electric buses), which also focused on expanding Singapore’s electric bus fleet.

As part of the LTA’s push to electrify Singapore’s public bus fleet, half of all public buses will be electric by 2030. To meet this target, LTA will procure more than 2,000 electric buses within the next five years, including double-deck models.

Manufacturers have also came forward with new three-door, two-staircase double-decker buses designed for the Singapore market. Three units were showcased at the LTA-UITP Singapore International Transport Congress & Exhibition (SITCE) 2024, namely the BYD BC12A05, CRRC eD12, and Zhongtong LCK6126EVGS (N12D).

Singapore’s commitment to electrifying its public transport system aligns with the nation’s broader Green Plan 2030 objectives. The adoption of electric buses is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions, noise pollution, and reliance on fossil fuels.

For more details on the tender submission and requirements, interested parties can visit the GeBIZ portal or refer to LTA’s official procurement guidelines. The tender will close on 22 May 2025, 4:00pm.

Does anyone know how it seems more BYD BC12 & Zhongtong N12 are taking awhile to be registered? Quite a few of Euro IV Batch 2 Scanias were given lifespan extention recently. Just wonder if the citaros and euro v scanias that got kicked out of 80/86/107/112/116/159/163 is enough to replace those retiring for now. No but seriously, about half of the batch 2 euro iv scanias are retiring this year and with a handful getting lifespan extention, lta need to start registering and deploying more ev buses soon to replace the retiring buses, they sure are taking awhile.

If more EV buses dont get registered soon by the time more Scanias are due to retire, i guess the remaining storage buses can cover those that retired and if those kicked out by EV buses arent enough.

Hopefully, EV buses issues got spotted early and gives even more headache for LTA to solve. They have already made the hole bigger than it should have been by introducing electric buses but did not solve the electric charging infrastructure issues. They could have gone to hybrid buses but guess its not ambitious enough.

For SDs, hoping that we’ll get more ZT N12s this time (say 180 out of 360), while the other 180 can be either BC12A04s again or something else from CRRC/Volvo etc. It would be better if bus models were standardized, since having too many different models from different manufacturers makes it harder to maintain. Can be registered from 3521 to 3880.

For DDs perhaps that B12D (BC12A05) or some of the ZT N12Ds. Again, bus manufacturer and model standardization. Can be registered from 7010 to 7309.

Btw, does anyone know when our dear 3101K is coming onboard?
