Route Amendment of Services 117 & 117M to Punggol Field
31 July 2022
From Sunday, 31 July 2022, SBS Transit Bus Services 117 & 117M will be amended to ply Punggol Field, skipping Punggol Central and a portion of Punggol Way.
Well, 39 did not need to be amended to start with. It was already perfect heading straight to psr. Now u have to add an extra 20 mins to the journey, when u could have just extend 117 and let it loop around psr int. Whoever wants to go ysh can always transfer at jln kayu. Still serves the purpose of linking psr and pgl. Gosh
Not really. If you have observed, there is high ridership from Punggol to pasir ris and tampines and vice versa. Bus 39 deserves its current routing. Bus 117 will have been a bad choice as its main objective will have been serving north (sembawang, Canberra, yishun) to seletar and also Punggol to seletar.
I think the point Vivibabe was trying to make is that it is not ideal to amend 39 because it is the fastest link between Pasir Ris and Yishun (that’s the primary objective of 39 in the first place). By amending it around Punggol and adding extra 20-30 mins to the journey (the traffic in Punggol is bad), the objective of bus 39 has shifted quite significantly since it is no longer the fastest link (969 -> 88/89 is faster) and it became the fastest service between Yishun – Punggol and Punggol – Pasir Ris/Tampines.
So the question we really need to answer is whether the demand for Yishun – Pasir Ris direct link is lower than the demand for (Yishun – Punggol) + (Punggol – Pasir Ris link) + (Yishun – Pasir Ris post amendment), to determine if the amendment of 39 is necessary.
Another factor to consider is if we extend 117 to Pasir Ris, what will be the disadvantage? (Note that if the amendment of 39 is justified only due to the high demand for Punggol – Pasir Ris link, extending 117 has the same effect + direct link from Seletar – Pasir Ris)
Exactly…there was never a need to amend 39 to start with. 39 is already full to the brim now that all the 3 towns (YIS, PGL, PSR) are being served together. It’s unfair especially when the frequency can be long and most of the buses are single deck. With 117 having lots of capacity, they could have chose the route to serve the catchments instead.
Granted, 117 is a long routing through Seletar as well, and the service is not always reliable. But by pushing 39 into punggol and losing a direct connection to yishun (lots of passengers by the way), it’s not going to benefit the problem which already is bad
What they should have done is to make a route from Woodlands (968) because that estate needs a connection too. Get into yishun and khatib (like 965/969), straight into Punggol before heading on to Pasir Ris. At least there is still a direct route to Pasir Ris (39) instead of squeezing even further. It’s not going to benefit if an already overflowing service is made to serve even more areas
I think 117 and 136 swap packages makes more sense. Even better if Loyang and Hougang under same operator. Can do cross regional deployment and let HGDEP handle most of 136 runs.
I think Punggol central (west side) has too many bus services and Punggol field (west side) has too little. Amending 117 to skip central (2 stops) and go by field (2 stops) will help alleviate situation a bit. Thanks.
How many amendments does 117 need?
As many as it needs lor. 117 is not even a good route. Bloody planners. Should have just went to pasir ris
Extend to psr for what? 39 is already there.

Prefer if absorb into Sembawang-Yishun package.

I prefer going to North/Central by Hougang package while east bound and loop service stays with GAS..Too many SBST service doesn’t make sense for BCM
