Operator History:
29 Nov 2021 – Present: SBS Transit Ltd
The Bus Service Operating License (BSOL) for this route will be renewed in 2024 under the Sengkang–Hougang Bus Package.
History:
2021 (29 Nov): Introduced between Punggol Temp Int and Sembawang Int via Seletar Aerospace Cres & Seletar Aerospace Link during weekday peak hours. Wheelchair accessible (WAB) at launch.
2022 (26 Jun): Serves a new bus stop outside Blk 471A along Yishun Ave 1
2022 (31 Jul): Amended to ply Punggol Field, skipping Punggol Central and a portion of Punggol Way
Personally took the last bus of 117M (7pm) from Punggol. The detour in seletar (117M exclusive route) was covered in 3 mins. I wonder if LTA is testing water with bus 117M to check the demand in the detour before amending 117 completely (the skipped bus stop is served by 103, and LTA likes to encourage us to transfer buses anyway).
I am curious why LTA likes to create variants of existing services that only deviate from its parent route by a few stops instead of amending it totally, especially when the travelling time doesn’t increase significantly. (Ironically they don’t do that for bus 39).
I agree that there will be a greater need for 39M rather than 117M/16M (which I think are just a waste of manpower required to update bus stop poles, update bus service info at every bus stops). Unless LTA can show data to convince that there are very few commuters who take 39 from Pasir Ris and Yishun (which is like the “selling point” of bus 39)
16 is different case. Some passengers want to go Bukit Merah Int directly while some passengers don’t mind waiting for the bus to Bukit Merah Polyclinic for 16M.
I am surprised LTA still kept the original 16 since they like to ask affected commuters to make a transfer, like “transfer to 851 at Tiong Bahru and Henderson”. like what is happening for the upcoming DTL rationalisation amendments

cos they are suck at planning. 39 should create 39M for those pasir ris to yishun but they never create. Seriously they dun know how to plan.

why don’t they do this for 16 as well
