Lifespan Extension of Scania K230UB (Euro V Batch 1) Buses

Scania K230UB (Euro V Batch 1) buses are being granted extensions to their statutory 17-year lifespan.

This batch of 400 buses were registered in 2009, featuring only one wheelchair bay and more seats as compared to the earlier batches of Euro IV Scania K230UB buses. These buses were originally due for retirement between March to October 2026.

Other bus models receiving lifespan extension recently are the Mercedes-Benz OC500LE buses & the earlier Scania K230UB (Euro IV) Batch 1 & Batch 2 buses.

Lifespan Extensions

Lifespan extensions for these buses started in January 2026, with the first batch of buses (which would have reached their statutory lifespan in March 2026) extended.

In April 2026, 15 buses were de-registered (reflected as on LTA OneMotoring), only to be reinstated back days later with a lifespan extension. Lifespan extensions for the remaining buses in this batch were updated in April 2026 as well.

Buses to be retired include the 5 buses previously converted into COVID-19 Patient Transport Vehicles.

It’s because the Ev buses cannot cover for the time being as only a few depots got electric chargers… Wait till Kim Chuan and East Coast plus Mandai operational with EV chargers some of these buses will get early retirement

More like not enough depots with adequate EV charging infrastructure, so neede to keep the KUBs around long enough until the new depots are ready.

Frm passenger pov, i wud say this model still delivers comfortable rides with sound acceleration & aircon till this day(except jerky at times). If maintenance cost remains reasonable enough over purchasing new buses, right decision to extend.
