Temporary Bus Interchange

The site of the Tampines North Bus Interchange was first seen on maps of the Tampines North area published by HDB in tandem with new BTO developments. In response to a media inquiry by 8World in July 2019, a Land Transport Authority (LTA) spokesperson revealed that as plans for the Tampines North Integrated Transport Hub are still in progress, a new Temporary Bus Interchange in Tampines North will be built to meet the transport needs of residents in the new estate (marked as “Interim Bus Interchange” in the accompanying map).

According to the URA Master Plan (2022 revision), the site occupied by Tampines North Bus Interchange is actually zoned for residential use in the future.

The future Tampines North Integrated Transport Hub would likely be sited just across the road from Tampines North Bus Interchange. It is zoned for a mixed-use residential and commercial site and is indicated in blue on the URA Masterplan.

In line with LTA naming practices observed since 2018 with the opening of Choa Chu Kang Bus Interchange, the name of the interchange makes no references to it being a temporary or interim facility.

Contract PT372Proposed Design and Construction of Bus Interchange & Associated Works at Tampines North was awarded to W’Ray Construction Pte. Ltd. in January 2020 for a contract sum of about S$12.8 million dollars. Construction was completed in 2022.

The Interchange

Tampines North Bus Interchange is located at the junction of Tampines Street 62 and Tampines North Drive 2. The main vehicle ingress/egress is via Tampines North Drive 2, while a backup vehicle access route leads to Tampines Street 62. Commuters can enter the interchange via access gates along Tampines Street 62.

The interchange serves new residential developments in the vicinity, such as HDB Tampines GreenDew and HDB Tampines GreenCourt.

On 31 October 2022, the LTA announced that the interchange would open on Sunday, 27 November 2022. Services 18 and 129 will be amended from Tampines Concourse to Tampines North on that day, while Service 298 will do so only at a later date, when the bus stops along Tampines Street 62 are ready.

LTA has touted commuter-friendly and inclusive commuter facilities, such as barrier-free access routes and toilets, and a dedicated priority queue at each berth. Staff amenities include dedicated staff toilets and a staff lounge. A reverse warning system is also installed to detect the movement of buses from the parking lots into the driveway.

Actually lta should extend service 18 to Changi Business Park Terminal rather that Bedok Depot.

With 18, 129 and in the future 298 moving to Tampines North interchange, will the Tampines Concourse bus interchange be closed? (They can easily make 39 terminate here too)

Hopefully, this bus interchange will be better utilized, unlike the Tampines Concourse which is severely underutilized. Otherwise should just amend the bus services from Tampines Concourse to serve the Tampines North instead of building a new interchange (I believe it’s way easier than building a new interchange and not adding any services, most of us here can probably think of more than 5 possible amendments per service)

Wonder what service will terminate here?
The service at Concourse can shift to Tampines interchange better.Service like 18,22,37,38 and a new feeder can start here.

Sorry, 22 looks like it will be stuck at Eunos for the foreseeable future, though I’d like to see it go to the Airport, with 24 truncated to Bedok.

As for 18, why is it terminating at BNDEP? I remember a user comment saying LTA no longer allows trips to originate from depots. If anything, 18 should merge with 7.
