LTA Announces Upgrades to Six Bus Interchanges

Upgrading works for 6 bus interchanges were announced by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on 18 August 2026. The six bus interchanges are Bishan, Bukit Batok, Bukit Merah, Eunos, Punggol and Tampines. This is the second batch of bus interchanges to undergo upgrades in recent years.

Key works include:

  • Enhancements to or provision of inclusive facilities, such as priority queue zones, additional seating, baby care/family washrooms, wheelchair-accessible toilets, commuter care rooms, tactile guided paths and Braille signs on handrails;
  • Replacement and upgrading of systems, such as air-conditioning and lighting; and
  • Refurbishment of staff facilities, such as passenger service offices and staff lounges.

Upgrading works for the previous batch of 7 bus interchanges, announced in August 2024 — Ang Mo Kio, Bedok, Boon Lay, Clementi, Sengkang, Serangoon and Toa Payoh, under Contract DE189 — are currently underway and are expected to be completed in 2027.

LTA published the tender on government procurement site GeBIZ for the upgrading works later on 19 Aug 2026, under Contract BD206 – Enhancement to Bus Infrastructure.

The titles of the tender documents publicly listed on GeBIZ indicate two packages, identified as BD206(A) and BD206(B). The listing also identifies optional works for two additional bus interchanges.

    Punggol Bus Interchange
    Sembawang Bus Interchange (Option)
  • Package B:

I believe that Tampines Interchange should be upgraded to an ITH in a similar fashion to Woodlands ITH, retaining the original layout and bus park. The construction could be done in the following 2 stages:

    Stage 1:
Convert the current car park inside the Southeast concourse to a new temporary passenger concourse, with 5 sawtooth berths, replacing the east side of the main passenger concourse. To better connect the two sides of the interchange, the old SMRT lots could be converted into a temporary walkway. Meanwhile, demolish Tampines Concourse Interchange and build a new ITH with an indoor bus park connected to the underground walkway at the plot of land bounded by Tampines Central 1, 3 and Avenue 7, with a potential development constructed above the interchange, similar to other ITH like Bedok. Upon completion of Stage 1, the Southeast concourse services could be shifted to the new passenger concourse while the buses still use the same bus park, and the Northwest concourse services could be shifted to the new (and much nearer) Tampines Concourse Interchange. Alighting can continue to take place at the old concourse using the alighting berths near the Tampines Central 3 entrance away from the main concourse.

    Stage 2:
The interchange concourse (including the end-on berths) as well as the surrounding shopping parade and commercial areas could be redeveloped while a new transfer link in between the DTL and the EWL is constructed. This phase would take the longest time, and would comprise of the bulk of the redevelopment plans. Once Stage 2 is completed, most services from both concourses can move over to their original berths in the revamped interchange. To relieve overcrowding at the new concourse, some services can remain at the other ITH.

    Final Arrangement:
The temporary passenger concourse for the Southeast concourse could be converted into a community area, while the Southeast concourse berths are labelled as Concourse A, the Northwest concourse berths as Concourse B, the end-on berths as Concourse C and Tampines Concourse ITH being renamed as Concourse D. The services could be arranged as such:
Concourse A (Services coming from the South-West):
    A1: Alighting
    A2: Alighting
    A3: 65, 67, 23
    A4: 10, 20, 31/A
    A5: 3/A, 39, 292
    Concourse B:
    B1: Alighting
    B2: 68/B, 72
    B3: 69, 291/T (East Loop)
    B4: 293/T, 291/T (West Loop)
    B5: EWL/DTL Bridging Services
    Concourse C:
    C1: 969/A
    C2: 127/A
    C3: 296, 460
Concourse D (Services coming from Tampines Avenue 7/Street 41)
    D1: Alighting
    D2: Alighting
    D3: 28, 29, 293/T (East Loop)
    D4: 4, 19, 37
    D5: 8, 38, 81
    D6: –
    D7: –

Do share any ideas for improvements below 🙂

It’s not that easy to do like WITH without having to close down the Interchange

I feel like for Tampines the two concourses makes it easier, so to upgrade the main central passenger concourse they can simply build a temporary concourse for the southeast where the current car park is, and the northwestern concourse can be shifted to a temporary site.
