Delayed Opening of Thomson-East Coast Line Stage 2

The opening of 6 stations of the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) Stage 2 has been further delayed to Q3 2021, as announced by the Land Transport Authority.

🚇 #TEL2, which was slated to open by Q1 2021, is now expected to open in Q3 2021 instead. The recent disruption of TEL has prompted us to review the software of the system, which contributed to the delay, more thoroughly with the contractor. As rail systems are complex, we will try to iron out as many teething issues as possible before opening the next phase.

Stage 2, comprising six stations between Springleaf and Caldecott was originally scheduled for opening in Year 2020.

Stage 3, comprising thirteen stations between Mount Pleasant and Gardens by the Bay, has also been delayed to open in 2022.

In a written answer to parliamentary questions in September 2020, Transport Minister Mr Ong Ye Kang mentioned that due to the circuit breaker and phased re-opening since April 2020 as part of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the opening of Stage 2 was delayed to Q1 2021. The opening was further delayed to Q3 2021 in an update by the Land Transport Authority via a Facebook Post in December 2020.

The revised completion and opening timelines for the remaining stages of TEL, as well as future train lines – Cross Island Line, Jurong Region Line, Circle Line Stage 6, are still being finalised.

On 30 June 2021, it was announced that Stage 2 of the Thomson-East Coast Line will open on 28 August 2021.

Why did they open only 3 stations in stage 1? They should have opened Woodlands North to Caldecott all together; nevertheless I understand that there are system checks that need to be thoroughly handled before opening the noted stations.
