New Ang Mo Kio multi-storey Bus Depot

A new multi-storey bus depot will be built in the Ang Mo Kio area, as revealed in a Land Transport Authority (LTA) tender published on 19 September 2025.

The LTA tender is titled Contract BD205 – Proposed Multi-Storey Bus Depot at Ang Mo Kio. Construction of the depot will begin in 2026 and is expected to be completed in 2030.

Overview

Ang Mo Kio Bus Depot is an upcoming multi-storey bus depot in Ang Mo Kio.

The facility will be constructed on a 4.5-hectare site in the Yio Chu Kang industrial area, on the grounds of the former SBS Transit Ang Mo Kio Bus Depot. Designed as a five-storey complex, it will accommodate more than 450 buses, comprising approximately 50 articulated buses of up to 18-metre lengths, along with 400 single- and double-deck buses of up to 12.5-metre lengths. The articulated bus lots would be located on the top two floors of the depot.

Facilities

A key feature of the depot will be its large-scale, high-power electric vehicle charging system, designed to support the LTA’s bus electrification goals. The exact number of chargers has not yet been specified.

Other facilities include a bus operations control centre, maintenance workshop, staff lounge, canteen, crew resting areas, and administrative offices, along with operational infrastructure such as an automatic bus washing system and a waste oil recycling system. The depot will also incorporate environmentally sustainable elements, including rooftop greenery, solar photovoltaic panels, and a rainwater harvesting system.

A 10-storey dormitory building will also be constructed within the complex to house more than 350 staff members. The dormitory will contain recreational and commercial amenities and will be managed separately from the depot, with its own security and access systems. Similar staff dormitories have been included in other bus depots commissioned by LTA, like Sengkang West and Gali Batu.

Outside the depot building, there will be three external bays designated for faulty electric buses. One of these bays will function as a water immersion tank, designed to fully submerge damaged or burnt electric buses in water, to cool their high-voltage battery systems, containing thermal runaway, and prevent battery re-ignition. The tank, constructed of reinforced concrete and measuring approximately 14 metres by 4.5 metres by 3.5 metres internally, will be open-roofed and fitted with a movable gate to allow a bus to be towed in before being flooded.

Design considerations

According to the LTA, the depot’s design places emphasis on operational efficiency. Factors such as internal traffic circulation, bus charging requirements, and site security were taken into account. The project also includes associated upgrades to surrounding roads, including carriageway widening and the installation of traffic signals to facilitate vehicular access to and from the depot and dormitory.

The new bus depot at Ang Mo Kio will be one of many bus depots commissioned by the LTA under the BCM, alongside BulimLoyangSeletarUlu PandanMandaiSengkang WestGali BatuEast CoastKim ChuanTengah, Pasir PanjangLorong Halus, and Simpang.

Depot Site & History

The new Ang Mo Kio Bus Depot is being built on the site of the former SBS Transit Ang Mo Kio Bus Depot at 15 Ang Mo Kio Street 63.

The old facility, which began operations in 1978, closed on 4 January 2025 and has since been demolished. It had a capacity of 438 buses; in comparison, the new depot will accommodate 450 buses while occupying roughly 70 per cent of the original land area. The smaller footprint frees up adjoining space for future industrial development.

The JIC Inspection Centre, which shared the same plot at 21 Ang Mo Kio Street 63, was also closed and demolished in 2025.

According to the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s Draft Master Plan 2025, the eastern section of the site remains zoned for transport use, while the western section, facing Ang Mo Kio Street 62, has been rezoned for business use. This hinted at the depot’s potential location at the time of this article’s publication on 19 September 2025.

The LTA confirmed the depot’s location in response to media queries, as reported by Lianhe Zaobao on 2 October 2025.

Separately, the former SMRT Ang Mo Kio Bus Depot at 6 Ang Mo Kio Street 62 was demolished in 2022. The site has also been rezoned for business use.

Route Package Assignment

Under Singapore’s Bus Contracting Model (BCM) implemented in 2016, ownership of all bus assets falls under the LTA, which includes the construction of new bus depots, and their subsequent tendering as part of a route package.

LTA has not disclosed the specific Route Package to which this new Bus Depot in Ang Mo Kio will be assigned. However, the nearby Seletar Bus Depot occupies a reserved site under the URA Draft Masterplan, and is not zoned for transport use in the long term. Should the multi-storey Ang Mo Kio Bus Depot be a replacement for Seletar Bus Depot, it will also take over as the main bus depot for the Seletar Bus Package.

Another possibility is for the new Ang Mo Kio Depot to support the Bishan-Toa Payoh Bus Package, covering 22 bus routes in Bishan, Toa Payoh, and Saint Michael’s. These services are operated by SBS Transit and were formerly garaged at both the old Ang Mo Kio Bus Depot and the soon-to-be-demolished Braddell Bus Park.

Construction Tender

The construction tender was published on 19 September 2025, titled BD205 – Proposed Multi-Storey Bus Depot at Ang Mo Kio, with a closing date of 17 December 2025.

Bishan – Toa payoh is using Kim Chuan Depot…

I thought simpang was seletar replacement but guess not? So Simpang is for SMRT’s woodlands package I suppose, since woodlands side would be demolish in the near future.

Lorong Halus is defo for serangoon-eunos since they are planning to have the same operator for north-east (Which I supposed would be SBST considering SK-Hougang has been extended for essentially a brand new term but wasnt announced)

Nope. Given the size of Kim Chuan, it’s more likely for Bishan-Toa Payoh.

They are making SK-HG and Serangoon-Eunos to be under 1 operator in the near future, which is why SK-HG has been silently extended to well beyond 2029.

Lorong Halus site is located inwards nearer to Hougang area, and it doesn’t make sense for Bishan services to use it. Although I also thought it’s Loyang replacement but it’s not as Loyang is also moving into ECID. Kinda obvious GAS would win Tampines as a result despite bidding the highest.

There is no reason for Mandai to move when it’s still marked as transport facility with the train depot, essentially saving space like ECID.

That’s why Simpang would be woodlands, AMK would be Seletar’s replacement.

Bedok rumours say moving closer to CBD area, and the only depot near there is Pasir Panjang.

Bedok services cannot move until CBD area unless you said CBP….if you said Pasir Panjang…that one likely for Bukit Merah since UPD will soon close once PP depot. completed or UPD will become temporary depot for BB depot if LTA decided to close BB depot while waiting new depot

ECID capacity is only 550 and you assume it will combined with Loyang that has more than 520 buses so Tampines buses park where? Your carpark?
SK/SGN combined alone is alreadt more than 850 so you think SK West can intake all?

You’re talking rubbish again. The Pasir Ris side of Loyang has already been said to move in with ECID, while the Punggol side will move into Lorong Halus

This is lowkey genius. Demolish the old depot to construct a new, larger capacity depot, while taking up less space. I do hope it is big enough to accommodate both Seletar & Bishan-Toa Payoh, although looking at the base plot size it seems unlikely it would be enough.

Jumping to another topic, It’s no wonder nothing was done to 45, 265 or 268 routes.
And it just so happened that a few days I was speculating on why URA DMP50 listed this former AMDEP plot for transport facilities whilst checking out BNDEP for different reasons entirely (and BNDEP is also permanent it seems)

The new multi-storey Ang Mo Kio Bus Depot is expected to be handed over to an unknown operator in 2030, ahead of its opening in 2031. It will take over operations from the existing Seletar Bus Depot, as the current Seletar Bus Package contract expires in March 2030. This timing coincides with the launch of the third tender term for the Seletar Bus Package, making the new depot the designated facility for its bus services.

Right, So can I assume Bedok North will received same thing too? AMK one I think the most is around 450 buses just good enough for Bishan Toa Payoh bus package.

I just thought of one funny coincidence
the BNDEP buses were parked at Changi Bus Park at one point before Loyang Bus Package commencement deemed it unnecessary (and the bus park was demolished for ECID)

Now, that same bus park is gonna take in some BNDEP buses in one way

After the handover, BN will have more space for Bedok package and there’s no need for ONP at Bedok ITH anymore… Ditto for Woodlands after BPJ svc move to GB
