A bus depot (or bus garage) is where buses are stored and maintained. They are essential facilities for bus operations, and provide a central location for maintenance, refuelling and bus parking, along with offices and ancillary facilities that support bus operations.
Bus Depots usually come with the following facilities:
- Administrative Offices
- NTWU Canteen
- Staff welfare facilities (e.g. lounges, gym, etc.)
- Bus parking area
- Bus washing machines
- Fuel pumps (Diesel and AdBlue)
- Inspection Lanes
- Workshop (for maintenance and overhaul)
- Bus Operations Control Centre (BOCC) (some depots)
- Bus repainting shop (some depots)
- Electric bus chargers (some depots)
In contrast, bus parks (or out-stations) are compounds that function as bus storage facilities. They provide minimal facilities and usually depend on bus depots on maintenance, refuelling and sometimes washing. However, some bus parks in Singapore function as fully independent bus depots.

Some bus depots are paired with bus parks for additional handling capacity of buses. Buses permanently stationed at bus parks regularly return to their bus depots for maintenance, refuelling, washing and more, depending on the facilities provided at the bus park. For instance, the former Ayer Rajah Bus Park had its own fuelling pumps and bus wash owing to its far distance away from its parent Bukit Batok Bus Depot, and buses only head back to Bukit Batok for maintenance works. Other paired bus depots/bus parks include Woodlands Depot / Woodlands Bus Park and Bedok North Depot / former Changi Bus Park.
As part of the gradual implementation of the Bus Contracting Model starting in 2016, newer bus depots are owned by the Government and leased out to bus operators who have won their respective bus package contracts.
In addition to parking buses at Bus depots and Bus parks, bus operators may carry out overnight parking at bus interchanges should there be insufficient parking spaces at bus depots.
Upcoming Bus Depots:
Bus depots in the future are fully owned by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and leased to operators as part of the Bus Contracting Model. To accommodate over a thousand additional buses in the next few years, more bus depots are being constructed across the island.

-SMRT will operate 4 bus packages (Jurong West, Sengkang-Hougang, Choa Chu Kang-Bukit Panjang, Woodlands).
-TTS will operate 4 bus packages (Bulim, Sembawang-Yishun, Clementi, Tengah).
-GAS will operate 3 bus packages (Loyang, Bedok, Tampines).
-Bukit Merah BP will shift over to PPDEP (Pasir Panjang Depot), allowing Clementi BP to shift to UPDEP (Ulu Pandan Depot) after BBDEP (Bukit Batok Depot) is decommissioned.
-Sembawang-Yishun will shift over to SPDEP (Simpang Depot), allowing Woodlands BP to shift to MNDEP (Mandai Depot) after WLDEP/WLBP (Woodlands Depot/Woodlands Bus Park) is decommissioned.
-Bedok BP and Tampines BP will share ECDEP (East Coast Depot).
-Tengah BP is a new proposed bus package for Tengah, operating out of TGDEP (Tengah Depot). This is suggested since Bulim BP will become too big if Tengah routes are added to it.
-Woodleigh routes can be shared between Bishan-Toa Payoh BP and Serangoon-Eunos BP.
-Bishan-Toa Payoh BP will split operations between KCDEP (Kim Chuan Depot) for all Bishan/Toa Payoh/Woodleigh trunk routes and BRBP (Braddell Bus Park) for all Saint Michael’s routes and all Bishan/Toa Payoh feeders. However, since KCDEP is slightly further away, LTA can consider building a new Toa Payoh Depot (TPDEP) at Toa Payoh West where there is available land.
-Of course, this is all subject to LTA’s planning and may not come to be in real life.
Thanks for taking the time to read my idea! 🙂
LTA need another 2 new depots for Bishan-Toa Payoh & Tampines bus packages
LTA should build a new bus park called Sin Ming Bus Park (SIBP) and a new bus depot called Toa Payoh West Depot (TPWDEP) for the Bishan-Toa Payoh Bus Package
If AMDEP is abolished some of the KCDEP lots will be reserved for Bishan-Toa Payoh Bus Package
