Service 171 is an inter-town route serving between the areas of Yishun and Bukit Panjang. It is a key inter-town connection between the towns of Yishun and Bukit Panjang, via BKE and Mandai Road, with no other public bus route offering a faster route.
This service plies a short express sector on the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE), between Mandai Road and Bukit Panjang Road.
Originally planned to be shortened to loop at Bukit Panjang MRT from 16 August 2020, the implementation date was deferred to 30 August 2020 following the Controversy over Bus 700 withdrawal and Bus 171 & 972 amendment.
Double Decker Bus Deployments
On 24 August 2015, SMB5059J (Alexander Dennis Enviro500) performed Service 171 in the evening as part of a crossover slot (969S151). On its maiden trip from Yishun to Marina Centre, the bus was withdrawn from revenue service at Bukit Panjang by the Operations Control Centre (OCC), which was likely due to the route not being officially certified as ready for double-decker deployment.
Another incident happened on 08 December 2016, where a MAN A95 Bus (SG5744S) performed Service 171 for several trips before being pulled out of service.
Regular double-decker deployments started on 12 August 2018, when they were deployed on high-capacity bus slots on Sundays / Public Holidays, replacing articulated buses. These regular deployments ceased when the route was cut short on 30 Aug 2020. However, Double-decker buses returned to service 171 under Tower Transit as part of the Sembawang-Yishun Bus Package from September 2021.

Now service 171 is demoted, why using those OC500LE buses?? Better to deploy CITARO buses or retain MAN NL323F buses.
Why not?
There is sometimes have MAN A22. I first took 171 amendment as MAN A22 back 31 August 2020. Also, sometimes they will deploy CITARO. Anytime they can deploy, trust me
Is LTA honestly serious ??? Just saw and took 171 at orchard area back to yishun. The bus had a gd loading and was in good demand.
Not jus my bus but other 171 also was having gd pax loads. Even 700 had a gd amt of pax. I feel its very evil of lta to do this.
Bus drivers were tested for COVID-19. Nobody wants to be in the bus for too long, this is an unsafe condition. However, without COVID-19, they may want to keep the service.
Why do you think they may want to keep the service? For a car lite nation, a 20 minute town & a 45 minute city? To provide alternate travel options in the event of an MRT breakdown especially for the Downtown, North South & Circle MRT Lines?
Alot of residents in Yishun will prefer to take 167/167e or North South Line to Orchard/City area, sometimes with 851/851e or 857. While for Bukit Panjang, it’s obvious many will prefer to take either 190, 960 or 972/972M. 171 is too long back then, so obviously no passengers want to sit on the long 171 ride to Orchard, as they prefer taking faster route
Please go to Bukit Panjang bus interchange to do the looping point if there’s a need to shorten the route, just like bus service 180. Then exit from the bus interchange to serve the bus stop Blk 180, before going back to Yishun.
There so many ways they could have saved it. The could have atleast converted it to become as 171e ply the usual route but limt the stops along bukit timah. Than atleast even with the cut. Many pax who take 171 along the cut of sector wont be affected. And who knows may even become profitable.
That’s no use, 171 have been duplicated by many bus services back before amendment.
Wait till mrt breakdown again. Than they will start to understand the importance of this bus routes. Clearly LTA never learn from their past mistakes.
Many residents in Yishun will rather take 857 to Marina Centre area and people go Orchard area normally will either take:
– SMRT 167
– SMRT 167e
– Upcoming TEL from 2020-2021 again.
NSEWL have been doing Early Closure Late Opening at selected sectors every month to facilitate maintenance works regularly to prevent huge disruptions
And also need to consider the hassle of transferring by purely rail travel between Yishun and Bukit Timah as well
Yishun and Bukit Timah, there’s 852 btw……….
852 la
There’s 67 and 170 to cover for almost the entire stretch of DTL2, along with 66, 961 etc for other partial sectors. When MRT breaks down SBST will cover with temporary bridging buses.
Resources should only be applied where they are due, otherwise it would lead to waste.
