Tengah Bus Interchange

Tengah Bus Interchange is an interim Bus Interchange with the Tengah New Town. It is bounded by Tengah Park Avenue, Tengah Boulevard, and the Parc Woods @ Tengah residential estate.

The interim bus interchange commenced operations on Sunday, 21 July 2024. This facility is not to be confused with the upcoming Tengah Integrated Transport Hub, which will be built at Tengah Town Centre, adjacent to Tengah MRT Station (Jurong Region Line).

Tengah Bus Interchange serves Bus Services 870, 871, and 992.

Brief History

In December 2019, the construction tender for the bus interchange (Contract PT396 – Proposed Design and Construction of Bus Interchange and Associated Works at Tengah Boulevard) was put up by the Land Transport Authority. This contract was awarded to Tat Hin Builders Pte Ltd in October 2020. The location of the interchange was also indicated within Tengah town maps issued by the Housing and Development Board (HDB) in 2020.

Tengah Bus Interchange opened on Sunday, 21 July 2024. Bus Services 870 & 992, which were loop services, were extended to serve the new interchange and become bi-directional services. A new bus service, 871, was also introduced on the same day, connecting Tengah New Town with Bukit Gombak and Beauty World.

Tengah Bus Interchange has three alighting and six boarding berths, with vehicle access via a signalised intersection with Tengah Boulevard.

Future Plans

The interchange is likely to be an interim facility, as it is zoned for residential use under the URA Master Plan 2019. Another bus interchange is being built to serve Tengah New Town—Tengah Integrated Transport Hub—which is situated adjacent to Tengah MRT Station (Jurong Region Line).

In line with current LTA naming conventions, interim and/or temporary bus interchanges no longer carry the “Temporary” name.

Article Name Change

This article was formerly titled “Tengah Boulevard Bus Interchange”, referencing the name used within the construction. It was changed to “Tengah Bus Interchange” in October 2023, referencing signages mounted at the new interchange and a Facebook post shared by local Member of Parliament Dr. Amy Khor.

944 or any bukit batok feeder service won’t be serving Tengah new town as the plan for the Tengah ITH is enough to cater two new feeder service there.174 & 181 candidate to terminate here. Most probable two new trunks and two new feeders is adequate.

Those Clementi service can give to Bukit Merah instead.160 can give Clementi package instead.

That’s why TTS Bulim should be the one serving Tengah and give up 96 and Clementi feeders to SBST.

Tengah Temporary Bus Interchange. As simple as that. The land parcels along Tengah Boulevard are mostly residential, if not commercial, so using it for bus interchange is only temporary. To make it easy to amend bus routes in future, the temporary bus interchange should be near the permanent bus interchange, preferably at the intersection of Tengah Park Avenue and Tengah Boulevard.

I see the project delivery date: 31 March 2022. It is too early. Existing bus routes such as 174, 944, 974 would probably eventually amend into Tengah to serve the Tengah population, and all these do not require bus interchange at the moment. Bus Interchange is only required at Tengah when other bus services like 983 (from Choa Chu Kang, amend to Tengah to serve Tengah Forest and Tengah Park), 181 (from Jurong West, amend to Tengah to serve Tengah Garden and Tengah Plantation), 945 (from Bukit Gombak, amend to Tengah to serve Tengah Park), amend into Tengah, and become too long to be loop service, such that they need a bus interchange. Anyway, in the beginning years from now until 2026, all that is required is the extension of 944 into Tengah and the amendment of 174 into Tengah when the roads are open. Eventually, I foresee 974 will come in to connect the Tengah industrial area with Hong Kah MRT Station (working name) as well as connect the Tengah industrial area with Choa Chu Kang and Jurong West. And that’s about it. I don’t foresee new bus services at Tengah. Rather, existing bus services 983, 181 and 945 amending into Tengah and becoming too long such that they need a bus interchange to terminate, as well as existing bus services 944, 174 and 974 amending into Tengah while on their way to other places. The opening of the temporary bus interchange in 2022 is probably for the early amendment of 181 and 945 into Tengah, considering Tengah Plantation is currently in the works and the first flats (launched in 2018) should be ready in 2022, and Tengah Garden and Tengah Park is next.

I honestly doubt that 983 will be amended to serve Tengah. 983 is almost like a trunk service that serves keat hong and other neighbourhoods in between Bt Panjang and CKK, and it’s the main way of providing a fast connection between the two estates (other than of course 67, 974, 976). Adding on a new sector at Tengah would make the route longer and hence lose it’s purpose
