Tengah Bus Interchange

Tengah Bus Interchange is an interim Bus Interchange with the Tengah New Town. It is bounded by Tengah Park Avenue, Tengah Boulevard, and the Parc Woods @ Tengah residential estate.

The interim bus interchange commenced operations on Sunday, 21 July 2024. This facility is not to be confused with the upcoming Tengah Integrated Transport Hub, which will be built at Tengah Town Centre, adjacent to Tengah MRT Station (Jurong Region Line).

Tengah Bus Interchange serves Bus Services 870, 871, and 992.

Brief History

In December 2019, the construction tender for the bus interchange (Contract PT396 – Proposed Design and Construction of Bus Interchange and Associated Works at Tengah Boulevard) was put up by the Land Transport Authority. This contract was awarded to Tat Hin Builders Pte Ltd in October 2020. The location of the interchange was also indicated within Tengah town maps issued by the Housing and Development Board (HDB) in 2020.

Tengah Bus Interchange opened on Sunday, 21 July 2024. Bus Services 870 & 992, which were loop services, were extended to serve the new interchange and become bi-directional services. A new bus service, 871, was also introduced on the same day, connecting Tengah New Town with Bukit Gombak and Beauty World.

Tengah Bus Interchange has three alighting and six boarding berths, with vehicle access via a signalised intersection with Tengah Boulevard.

Future Plans

The interchange is likely to be an interim facility, as it is zoned for residential use under the URA Master Plan 2019. Another bus interchange is being built to serve Tengah New Town—Tengah Integrated Transport Hub—which is situated adjacent to Tengah MRT Station (Jurong Region Line).

In line with current LTA naming conventions, interim and/or temporary bus interchanges no longer carry the “Temporary” name.

Article Name Change

This article was formerly titled “Tengah Boulevard Bus Interchange”, referencing the name used within the construction. It was changed to “Tengah Bus Interchange” in October 2023, referencing signages mounted at the new interchange and a Facebook post shared by local Member of Parliament Dr. Amy Khor.

    I suggest if Tengah Bus Interchange starts off with amending 3 services to Tengah INT and 1 new feeder
    390: a new feeder service from Tengah INT looping at Tengah Garden Walk
    852: Yishun to Tengah (Extended from Bukit Batok)
    870: Looping at Tengah INT from Jurong Town Hall
    992: Looping at Tengah INT from Bukit Batok

    I don’t think many service will be starting/ending here..’Maybe similar like JTHI..

    870 to Jurong Town Hall Int
    871 new service to Woodlands Temporary Int
    992 to Bukit Batok Int
    993 to Jurong East Int(Absorbed into Bulim Package)
    93x 2 new feeder service.

    96,282,284 & 285 all into Clementi Package but temporary managed by Ulu Pandan.

    49, 66, 96, 104 (a new service to serangoon), 148 (a new service to hougang), 174, 183, 188, 192, new feeders 390, 391, 395, 399, and 968 (a new service from woodlands)

    The infrastructure looks cheap. Also, considering now in Q4 2023 we are starting to see the first bus route in Tengah, the bus interchange may open in 2024, when there are new BTOs ready to justify at least one bus route amendment to use the new bus interchange.

    Anyway, the infrastructure looks cheap. Probably will be replaced around 3 years after the JRL Tengah station opens in 2027. Which means 2030. This bus interchange is probably meant to use for only 7 years.

    So, in terms of Cost Benefit Analysis, this bus interchange would have a relatively high Return On Investment (being the temporary rest point for bus drivers before the permanent one is ready many years later).

    Also, considering a new town will have a lack of amenities at first, the canteen that the bus interchange will definitely have, and the newspaper kiosk (provision shop) that the bus interchange may possibly have, would bring relief to the first batch of Tengah residents, before these kind of provisions are available elsewhere in Tengah.

    Therefore, the implementation of the bus interchange is relatively aligned with the gradual opening of the Tengah new town, and the bus interchange has a relatively high Returns On Investment. 😊

    66: Tengah – Beauty World (JRL bus rationalization)
    171: Tengah – Yishun (Instead of looping at Bt Panjang)
    172: Tengah – Boon Lay (JRL bus rationalization)
    173: Tengah – Clementi (Make space for the 99x buses at Bukit Batok Interchange)
    174: Tengah – Kampung Bahru (Replace the semi-express sector between Boon Lay and Bukit Batok)
    177: Tengah – Bukit Panjang (Make space for the 99x buses at Bukit Batok Interchange)
