History of Pasir Ris Bus Services

Introduction:

Pasir Ris is one of Singapore’s latest satellite towns developed since the late 1980s, located in the eastern region of the island. To cater to the increasing population in the developing public housing estate, SBS gradually introduced new trunk services and extended the routes of existing trunk services from the adjacent areas of Bedok and Somapah, as well as providing several feeder services that connected the town’s neighbourhoods with the town centre.

While there was no specific bus plan implemented by SBS, Pasir Ris Bus Interchange serves as the main transport hub for bus services and the MRT in the housing estate, opening its doors on 10th December 1989 at Pasir Ris Drive 3. The current air-conditioned Integrated Transport Hub (ITH) is sited in a separate location west of the original bus interchange.

Pre-Interchange Opening (1988 – 1989):

Before the development of Pasir Ris New Town, the area where the housing estate occupies today was mainly served by long distance trunk services along Tampines Road.

In June 1988, SBS introduced the 1st bus route in Pasir Ris – (former) Bus Service 19, connecting the then-developing housing estate with Tampines and Bedok New Towns. This was on top of Bus Service 403, which was launched back in 1977 to connect Tampines Road with Pasir Ris Beach / Park.

Subsequently, Bus Service 12 was extended from the defunct Somapah Bus Terminal to an interim roadside terminus along Pasir Ris Drive 3, connecting the new estate with Tampines, Bedok South, East Coast, Bugis and Chinatown.

On 10th December 1989, the new Pasir Ris Bus Interchange was opened, offering a pleasant environment for bus passengers to transfer and wait for their buses. Both bus services were relocated to the new interchange, alongside the launch of new Feeder Bus Service 350.
