1979 New Bus Plan for Bedok

Expansion of Bedok Bus Interchange & Closure of Chai Chee Bus Terminal:

While the opening of Bedok Bus Interchange has provided greater convenience for residents in the housing estate, it was frequently met with complaints regarding its narrow concourse, leading to heavy congestion and overcrowding during the peak hours. This was due to the smaller sizes of its sawtooth boarding berths, and was exacerbated by the increasing number of bus services that were amended to the interchange, or were launched after its initial opening in 1979.

Thus, in 1981, SBS embarked on a project to expand the premises of Bedok Bus Interchange at a cost of $2.5 million, increasing its size from the present 1.2 hectares to 1.6 hectares. The expanded bus interchange was expected to be able to accommodate up to 26 bus services, including existing bus services operating from Chai Chee Bus Terminal. The new and expanded concourse of the Bedok Bus Interchange was progressively opened from Sunday, 26th June 1983, with several bus services being relocated to the new end-on boarding berths.

With the completion of the expansion works for the Bedok Bus Interchange, Chai Chee Bus Terminal was eventually closed by the SBS in 2 stages from 8th to 15th September 1985, with 9 of its bus services relocated to the bus interchange, as well as the integration of its remaining bus services with existing bus services operating from the Bedok Bus Interchange.
