SMRT Trains

SMRT Trains is a Rail Operator in Singapore. It is a division of SMRT Corporation, a multi-modal public transport operator in Singapore, founded in March 2000, which runs bus, rail, taxi and other public transport services via several wholly-owned subsidiaries. It is presently the largest rail operator in Singapore.

The company has its roots in the Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRTC), an organisation set up in October 1983 to oversee the construction and operation of the rail network. In August 1987, Singapore Mass Rapid Transit Limted (SMRT) was set up as a private company tasked with operating the rail network, ahead of the opening of the North South Line three months later.

While having its origins as a train operator, the company later diversified into buses and taxi operations, most significantly having acquired Trans-Island Bus Services (TIBS) as a subsidiary in 2001, and with it a portion of the public bus industry. It also offers rail and automotive maintenance and engineering services.

SMRT now operates the North South LineEast West LineCircle Line and the Thomson-East Coast Line (from Year 2019). It operates the Bukit Panjang LRT through its subsidiary, SMRT Light Rail.
