Service 117 commenced operations on 20 Dec 2015 as the fifty-first (51st) bus service to be introduced under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP).

Service 117 is an alternative travel option for passengers who utilize Service 85 to travel between Punggol and Yishun towns, skipping the Sengkang residential areas entirely. It was the first service to serve new bus stops for the then upcoming developments along Yishun Avenue 1, connecting residents to Khatib MRT.

The service was amended to enhance connectivity in Apr 2016 through an amendment to ply West Camp Rd instead of plying express along Seletar West Link. In November 2021, the service was amended to serve Canberra estate via Canberra Cres, Canberra Walk & Sembawang Road for enhanced connectivity.

The Bus Service Operating License (BSOL) for this route will be renewed under the Sengkang–Hougang Bus Package, in which the negotiated contract term was extended by an undisclosed number of years from 2024.

History:

• 2015 (20 Dec): Introduced between Punggol Temp Int and Sembawang Int under the LTA’s Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP); Wheelchair accessible (WAB) at launch
• 2016 (24 Apr): Amended to ply West Camp Rd
• 2017 (26 Nov): Serves additional bus stop outside Punggol Stn/Int along Punggol Central
• 2018 (27 May): Serves new pair of bus stops outside and opposite The Visionaire along Canberra Link
• 2018 (25 Nov): Serves 3 new bus stops before and opposite Blk 469B and opposite Yishun St 43 along Yishun Ave 1
• 2019 (02 Nov): Serves new pair of bus stops outside and opposite Canberra Stn along Canberra Link
