History:

In the past, bus services terminated at scattered parts of Sembawang, each with its own small bus terminal. One such terminal, Admiralty Road West Bus Terminal (Service 980), was located at the junction of Admiralty Road West and Canberra Road, and catered for the workers at Sembawang Shipyard. Another was Sembawang Road End Bus Terminal (Service 167), was located at the end of Sembawang Road where Sembawang Park is today.

When Sembawang Bus Interchange opened on 20 November 2005, Service 167 and 980 were shortened from their respective termini to serve the new interchange, and these termini were closed. Service 882 was introduced to cover the deleted sector of Service 167 to Sembawang Road End, and the existing Service 856 covered lost sectors of Service 980 around Admiralty Road West. Service 981, previously terminating along Sembawang Way (outside Sembawang MRT), was amended to start and terminate at this interchange.

New bus services were introduced over the years, such as 859A/859B in 2014, 117 in 2015, 883 in 2016, and 883M in 2020.

I think LTA can introduce another service 884 into Sembawang interchange, can loop at Woodlands Drive 16, while passing through Woodlands Avenue 12. This will provide greater access for Sembawang residents to Thomson-East Coast Line (by passing through TE3 Woodlands South MRT Station).

859A & 859B are already acting like feeder bus services already……. Same to 882 partially….. So no need to have proper feeder service as 859A & 859B are the main job.

For 858, originally it was meant to be Yishun – Woodlands before extending to Changi Airport in 1997. Shortening to Sembawang Int for 858 also no use as the route for 858 serves inner northern part of Woodlands, and don’t forget, it doesn’t serve Admiralty MRT for 858.

So, it’s unlikely 858 to shorten to Sembawang. If is too crowded for 858, you’ll either feedback to LTA or introduce new Airport service from Sembawang/Yishun Ring Road in the future. 858 will remained in Woodlands for rest of its life.

LTA can do wonders..I got a feeling a feeder or feeder-like service will be introduced.
