Service 859 is a residential trunk route linking many parts of Sembawang Estate with Yishun and Sembawang MRT stations, while also serving various neighbourhood amenities. It is one of several bus routes to serve residents within the small Sembawang estate. By making one round around the Sembawang estate before terminating at Sembawang Int, passengers can board the bus at appropriate bus stops along Sembawang Drive or Sembawang Vista if they intend to head towards Yishun directly. Double-deck buses were introduced to the route on 23 December 2018.
Within the Sembawang estate, Service 859 is complemented by its route variants Service 859A and Service 859B, which ply the same sections of Service 859 within Sembawang estate while terminating at Sembawang interchanges.
The service was amended to serve Bukit Canberra and Canberra Link as part of the Thomson-East Coast Line 3 Bus Service Rationalisation from 17 December 2023, complementing Service 167 along Canberra Link and part of Sembawang Drive. The amendment was intended to take effect from 10 December 2023 to replace the lost sector of Service 167 upon its withdrawal, but was delayed by 1 week in an announcement by the Land Transport Authority on 28 November 2023 with the cancellation of Service 167’s withdrawal.

859 fleet should be 6 OCs and 4 3-door Enviro 500..859A/B should be full A22.The B5LH should give 167.
859 should delete it’s Sembawang residential sectors, while 882 also withdraw. Introduce Services 830G/W to cover up as feeder services, plying same routes as 859A/B while taking a detour to Sembawang Park via Montreal Link.
883M can withdraw, 859 take its place with similar route except plying Sembawang Road before plying Canberra Link, skipping Canberra estate.
