Bus Service 181 is a trunk service that connects residents of Jurong West Neighbourhoods 7, 8, and Wenya Estate (Neighbourhood 2) to Boon Lay MRT/Bus Interchange. The route travels along Jurong West Street 64 and 75, then Jurong West Avenue 5 and 3, where it makes a U-turn at the end before returning to Boon Lay.

Although it operates entirely within the Jurong West area, Service 181 is classified as a trunk service since its launch in 2005 rather than a feeder service, possibly catering for a potential extension beyond Jurong West estate. Such an extension would only arrive in 2026, when it was extended to Tengah.

On school term weekday mornings, from 6:30 am to 7:45 am, Service 181 is replaced by its route variant, Service 181M, which loops at Jurong West Street 23. This variant provides access to Corporation Primary School, which is otherwise only served by Bus Service 185. During this time, Service 181 does not operate while Service 181M is in service.

On the eve of public holidays, operating hours will be extended to align with the extended train service hours. Extended last bus timings will be provided by the operator closer to the affected day.

Extension to Tengah:

On 9 February 2026, the Land Transport Authority announced plans to extend Service 181 to Tengah Bus Interchange under the Bus Connectivity Enhancement Programme (BCEP). The route amendment was eventually announced for 14 June 2026.

The route amendment will enhance connectivity to Bulim Industrial Estate and inter-town connectivity between Jurong West and Tengah. In addition, Service 181M will operate concurrently with Service 181 during morning peak hours, with no change to its route.

With the extension to Tengah, there are future planned bus stops for Service 181. These are:

  • 2 pairs of bus stops along Bulim Ave
  • 1 pair of bus stop along Jurong West Ave 2
  • 1 pair of bus stop along Tengah Blvd

  • Jurong Medical Centre / The Frontier Community Club

For goodness sake, the current temporary routing of 243 and 258 to go via the Blk 861 and Blk 762 pair of bus stops at Jurong West Avenue 5 is good, because it allows for same bus stop transfer to 181 to go to and from Tengah.

Hopefully, 258 can be permanently amended to use the Blk 861 and Blk 762 pair of bus stops at Jurong West Avenue 5. Especially since 258 currently duplicates 243 between Jurong West Street 82 and Street 64.

It will be helpful for Jurong West residents staying at Street 81, 71, 61 and Pioneer road North. It will also be helpful for Tengah residents to travel to the industrial areas along bus 258 easily.

After the Blk 861 and Blk 762 pair of bus stops at Jurong West Avenue 5, if nowhere else to serve, 258 can simply continue onto Jurong West Avenue 3 and loop via Jurong West Street 23 and Street 24. Thereby also providing a full-day bus connection to that area (which is currently mostly empty land), and help to open up that area for developments.

This will permanently resolve the concern of 258 duplicating 243, and let 258 have a unique purpose in Jurong West area.

Hopefully the LTA can consider this route amendment for bus 258.

Can tell that they are trying to change 181 into the trunk bus route that it was originally meant to be, instead of the feeder that most people have it to be since its introduction in 2005 until now.

People will be forced to change travel pattern.

    1. Residents staying at Avenue 3 will be forced to take 199 and 172 to Boon Lay Bus Interchange (which is shorter) instead of take 181, due to lower frequency of 181 which will make 181 less attractive to them (especially when going to work or going to town, since other direction need cross the road).

    2. Students studying at Corporation Primary School, if don’t have 181M, will have to do bus transfer to 185. Actually this primary school should just close, and merge with another primary school.

    3. Those staying at Street 75, will be more likely to take 243 instead of 181 – mainly because of 181 frequency adjustment due to the extended route which will extend 181 route more than 2 times. Street 64 got 243 and 193, so it’s still okay.

Needless to say, they got do simulations before approving this route amendment, so the above adjustments to travel patterns are anticipated.

199, 172, 243, 193 will see more people take, which is reasonable since they got the capacity to carry more people.

The approximately 5km route extension to Tengah likely won’t be the last extension to 181, as 181 will still be short (new length = approximately 8km) and still can extend somemore (probably another 8km) to have a length matching a typical trunk bus route.

The new 181 to Tengah is almost like an express feeder, like many new bus routes launched under the same BCEP program previously.

Just 2 more bus stops (at the moment) in Jurong West, and then straightaway go to Tengah already.

The extension is honestly launched a few years early. It will shave a considerable amount of traveling time by public transport between Tengah and Jurong West (Gek Poh and Nanyang).
