Bus Service 181 is a trunk service that connects residents of Jurong West Neighbourhoods 7, 8, and Wenya Estate (Neighbourhood 2) to Boon Lay MRT/Bus Interchange. The route travels along Jurong West Street 64 and 75, then Jurong West Avenue 5 and 3, where it makes a U-turn at the end before returning to Boon Lay.

Although it operates entirely within the Jurong West area, Service 181 is classified as a trunk service since its launch in 2005 rather than a feeder service, possibly catering for a potential extension beyond Jurong West estate. Such an extension would only arrive in 2026, when it was extended to Tengah.

On school term weekday mornings, from 6:30 am to 7:45 am, Service 181 is replaced by its route variant, Service 181M, which loops at Jurong West Street 23. This variant provides access to Corporation Primary School, which is otherwise only served by Bus Service 185. During this time, Service 181 does not operate while Service 181M is in service.

On the eve of public holidays, operating hours will be extended to align with the extended train service hours. Extended last bus timings will be provided by the operator closer to the affected day.

Extension to Tengah:

On 9 February 2026, the Land Transport Authority announced plans to extend Service 181 to Tengah Bus Interchange under the Bus Connectivity Enhancement Programme (BCEP). The route amendment was eventually announced for 14 June 2026.

The route amendment will enhance connectivity to Bulim Industrial Estate and inter-town connectivity between Jurong West and Tengah. In addition, Service 181M will operate concurrently with Service 181 during morning peak hours, with no change to its route.

With the extension to Tengah, there are future planned bus stops for Service 181. These are:

  • 2 pairs of bus stops along Bulim Ave
  • 1 pair of bus stop along Jurong West Ave 2
  • 1 pair of bus stop along Tengah Blvd

  • Jurong Medical Centre / The Frontier Community Club

181 will definitely shorten the travel time between Tengah and Jurong West (Gek Poh and Nanyang).

Currently, it takes about 47 minutes (at Jurong West Avenue 3) to 57 minutes (at Jurong West Street 81), to travel to/from Tengah Plantation Plaza.

With 181 extension to Tengah, one can expect the travel time to be shortened to 23 minutes (at Jurong West Avenue 3) to 45 minutes (at Jurong West Street 81), to travel to/from Tengah Plantation Plaza.

    Time savings: 21% (Street 81) to 51% (Avenue 3).

The 181 extended route was announced today at around 5:18pm.

The nearest bus stop to Plantation Plaza is Blk 231B, the straight forward walking distance (via Plantation Crescent) is 350 meters (5 minutes walk) to Plantation Plaza.

From Plantation Plaza, the nearest bus stop to take 181 back to Jurong West is Blk 132B, in which the walking distance is also 350 meters (5 minutes walk).

Anyway, Google Maps will surely recommend the nearest bus stop and the shortest walking route.

Whereas for Pioneer Primary School, it is 400 meters walking distance from the nearest bus stop at Blk 224A, and 500 meters walking distance to the nearest bus stop at Blk 132B. Previously, at the original Pioneer Primary School location, it is also about 400 to 450 metres walking distance. So considered back to square one.

    Cuckoo
What is that freaking u turn
They better not take away 181’s DD because of that

Thank goodness it’s temporary. Once the Jurong Canal Road intersection fully opens the u-turn will be no more!
    (They better do it fast)

As a Tengah resident, and seeing the concerns in our community groups – Tengah being a car-lite town, or at least being envisioned as one, requires probably a different set of lens to plan. Infrastructural completion takes (a long) time, and while waiting for JRL, and the PIE / KJE interchanges at Jurong / CCK, we genuinely hope for more route enhanced buses. And it’s not just about one bus route seeming convenient to pass through Tengah and therefore it should – From bus 97 example I’m very hopeful that authorities know what they are doing, because many online comments before the announcement guessed or suggested 174, 171, etc (can’t recall all), and 97/97e was such a pleasant surprise (few if any, guessed it). We have residents hoping for more direct routes to other areas (we do our part collectively to voice out to authorities), and hopefully before JRL completes, given the extended delay, we could see light in the tunnel for more fantastic route improvements.

Which means 181 will be using interim route Bulim Green and Bulim Street, until the remaining section of Bulim Drive that is still under construction is ready.

And if they doing route familiarization now, means to say they may be preparing to launch the route extension soon.

Hopefully 181 can be a detour along Tengah Garden Avenue and Plantation Crescent – to connect to Pioneer Primary School (again, and this time just next to Pioneer Primary School), and also to connect to the Plantation Plaza and Tengah CC commercial area where there are many commercial outlets.

Otherwise really no point if it is just go straight along Tengah Boulevard and end at Tengah Bus Interchange.

I have just walked the ground, at Bulim.

3 pairs of bus stops confirmed:
    – at Bulim Walk, immediately next to Jurong West Avenue 3.
    – at Bulim Drive, next to Bulim Square Tower 1.
    – at Bulim Drive, next to the edge of Bulim bus depot.

Bulim Drive next to Bulim bus depot is still under construction (no road constructed yet).

Anyway, with this, it is clear that the routing in Bulim will be: Jurong West Avenue 3, Bulim Walk, Bulim Drive, Bulim Avenue.

The section of Bulim Drive, earliest also need about six months to build, because other than road, also got the skywalk above it.

Nonetheless, Bulim Square Towers, already completed, but relatively empty, already got two food establishments going to open (marry brown and luckin coffee).

They may still let 181 go into Bulim industrial area now, since it is 90% completed, and they really need people to go to Bulim Square Towers, but definitely will go a temporary route (Bulim Green and Bulim Street), since got one section of Bulim Drive still not ready.

Whereas at Tengah, the alignment should be what is stated at the HDB material.

Actually, if they are waiting for that section of Bulim Drive, which is still under construction (still digging the ground at the moment), 181 extension is unlikely going to happen in 2026. Probably in 2027.

Perhaps, we should temporarily not think about 181 extension into Tengah for now. It will probably extend into Bulim industrial area first, and loop via Bulim Green and Bulim Lane 2 – just to connect to Bulim Square. With no bus stop at Bulim Green and Bulim Lane 2 since it is just temporary. Then, some time in 2027, or later (when Tengah Way is connected to Jurong West Avenue 2), then 181 extend again to Tengah.

In other words, 181 extension into Tengah may be announced too early. The eventual route extension will probably be Bulim Walk, Bulim Drive, Bulim Avenue and Jurong West Avenue 2 in Bulim industrial area, and Tengah Way, Tengah Garden Avenue and Tengah Garden Boulevard in Tengah industrial area. Approximately 5.6km route extension eventually, extending 181 length in one direction from 3.3km currently to 8.9km eventually – which is still short, and definitely still can extend somemore towards Choa Chu Kang or Bukit Panjang next time.
