Bus Service 31 is a trunk bus service connecting Tampines and Toa Payoh, passing through Bedok, Marine Parade, Old Airport, Kallang, and Boon Keng. It is a vital transport link for residents and commuters travelling across these neighbourhoods, with high-demand sectors including the route between Tampines Interchange and Tanah Merah MRT (particularly for ITE College East students), and the stretch between Bedok MRT and Marine Parade.

The fleet primarily consists of double-deck buses.

Historical Background

Service 31 was introduced in May 1979, initially operating between Bedok and Stadium (Loop) via Marine Parade and Old Airport. It was extended eastward to Tampines in 1985 and westward to Toa Payoh in 1993. Despite these extensions, much of its core catchment between Old Airport and Bedok has remained consistent since the 1980s.

Demand Patterns

Service 31 sees high ridership between Tampines Interchange and ITE College East. As a result, Short Trip Service 31A is operated on ITE school days, running from Tampines to Tanah Merah MRT in the mornings. Additional trips of Service 31 are added in the reverse direction in the afternoons and evenings, from Tanah Merah to Tampines.

For residents in Marine Parade, Service 31 provides a direct link to the Circle Line at Dakota MRT, complementing Service 16, which connects via Joo Chiat. Additionally, it serves as an alternative to Services 13 and 197 between Kallang and Marine Parade, offering varied routing options for commuters.
